You dont need a 3rd party firewall. I prefer the Inbuilt firewall in Leopard. (Goto System Prefs --> Firewall)
You could also you Norton Firewall or Norton Confidential, but causes System to crash sometimes... I'd suggest to avoid 3rd party security apps. Just use ClamXav for file scanning if you are so particular...

In a corporate network where you would want to secure from attacks from within the network, setting up the Macs firewall might make sense, if it is "family network" you dont have to - if a router with fw secures attacks from outside. You can get those routers starting at 50 dollars. On Virus - well - I never installed any Anti-Virus sw, but I would recommend using ClamAV cause with the growing popularity of Mac OS x we will see more Virusses. just my 2 cent

(it's very very similar to m0n0wall) Volkspost's suggestion is great as well. V. if you have time, load dd-wrt on the router if yours is support. It's one of the best.

i would say, pfsense is the same like m0n0wall except the colors of the design. |

not quite ... psfsense is a fork of the m0n0wall project.
They are very similar but there are differences that one will prefer over the other. Both are great though.
