If it's a carrier branded Omnia, then unfortunately the carrier had watered down a lot of the features that have been implemented in it. I'm sure there are, however, a few hacks to restore the software side, the carriers took it one step further to mash down the processor speed (sorry, i'm being very vague, but I recall reading this in a different forum..i believe they said an 80 mhz underclock and half the ram, but it could've been for the Tilt and not the Omnia).
The iPhone 3g is a good buy, but from what I hear, it's a bit more cost effective to jump to the 3gs, because of its speed and ram upgrade. That just covers you for future applications and of course having a snappier device. Despite all this, even an iPhone 2g is still decent to have, with 3g signal and slower performance really racking it down.
It's up to you mate, I'm aware the Omnia's got a great feature set, and it also depends on whether you're getting an unlocked one vs a carrier branded one. If it's unlocked, hands down, get the Omnia. Better bang for the buck. If carrier branded, I'd rather see you get a better performing device in trade for a degrade in camera and media handling purposes (mind you the Omnia's windows mobile os will be able to multitask, sadly unless you're familiar with the trickery on the jailbroken iphone os could you really switch between apps without them closing..which I'm still sure is not yet fully utilized. Again, being vague, I'm not certain).
