What happens in the future if we get off the Pwnage Train by updating to official 3.1.2 and then re-JB/unlocking with BlackRa1n/BlackSn0w? Will we lose our seat on the Pwnage Train for JBing future updates?

I have a 3GS JB/unlocked on Pwned 3.1.2 with 4.26.08 baseband. Tethering works perfectly, as well as MMS. I'm debating whether I want to risk upgrading the baseband and doing a JB/unlock with BR/BS.

Per MuscleNerd, the blackra1n jailbreak means your device is pwned meaning you can restore pwnagetool custom firwmare to it.

Getting off the pwnage train means you updated your baseband and the only way that can happen is by putting a factory ipsw on it.

Pwnage implies 2 things:
1. keep your device pwned.
2. keep your baseband untouched

If I were you, I would stay put. No point of updating that baseband at the moment. In fact, that is your safety net.

I'm waiting for Dev Team to take a look at blacksn0w unlock to see if there is a fault/bug somewhere.
So far, scatter reports of wifi problem after blacksn0w ... which is a concern for me.

For those who has 05.11.07 BB, blacksn0w is their only choice at the moment ... but Dev Team may or may not create something based on that. Just my guess.

It's tempting to want to try the newest tricks, but I'm also thinking "if it ain't broke, why fix it?". Thanks for confirming I'm on the right track. (sorry for the bad train pun )

I am very tempted as well but we are at a point where an unlock is getting harder and harder to achieve. Therefore we must exercise cautiously and practice common sense.

I do have a friend's 3G iphone (with fw 3.1 + 05.11.07) with me. However, I'm still debating how I want to approach this. The wifi with blacksn0w bothers me hence I'm still waiting ... (see the other thread, my response to jon_slider regarding hacktivation)

I saw the "chatter" you posted. It sounds like the 3G may be more problematic than the 3GS, if I understand correctly.

I'm debating what to do for a friend stuck with the new iBoot. I think I'm going to try BR/BS on his 3GS. He really doesn't have any other choice right now. I'm worried though about potential small bugs and about his future options. I remember how quickly George abandoned PurpleRa1n/Sn0w. I hope BR/BS remain compatible with future Dev Team tools.

There are 2 things to consider when "moving" to 3.1.2:

- With an older baseband there are always more unlock options. Having a 04.26.08 *may* be a better alternative than 05.11.07 for a future firmware (not saying it will, but it's not impossible). So if you still have your baseband at 04.26.08, there is no compelling reason to upgrade.

- To remain on the jailbreak train, the key is to save the ECID SHSH, that is done but forcing the restore to go thru the Cydia "proxy".

As dtube pointed: things are getting harder and harder, so better safe than sorry.
