the short version:
1. seems hacktivation kills youtube, the fix is activation with a legit sim..
2. Not sure I understand Bigboss's discussion about losing activation when changing to unofficial Sim.. let me know if this is right:

seems legit activation allows the unlock to work with an unofficial sim without needing to re-hacktivate, if its a 3GS, but for a 3G blackra1n needs to hacktivate for a TmobileUsa sim to work (need confirmation from someone with both ATTUsa and TmobileUSA sims please and both 3G and 3GS iPhones)

the long version:
I am one of the people who had youtube not work, when I ran blackra1n after a virgin install of FW3.1.2, with NO sim card installed. So it was hacktivated and youtube did not work. (but safari did, and I could get to youtube that way)

I then repeated the virgin install of FW3.1.2 but this time with the legit ATTUsa sim installed, so it activated. Youtube now works.

then, as to big boss's question about unlock and activation, a few posts back in this thread bmw says he had the same results:

"I inserted the AT&T Sim Card, I restored firmware 3.1.2 on itunes again. It automatically Activated for me with the AT&T Sim Card and Youtube now works.

I took out the AT&T SIM Card and inserted my T-mobile Sim Card.

I then used black1rain to unlock and install cydia. "

To me that means, I think, that after being activated with ATT and then unlocking and inserting a Tmobile sim, did not require a new hacktivation.. At least I think thats what it means.. unfortunately I no longer have any Tmobile Sims to test with, all my phones are on ATTUsa now..

its a concern for me because I am want to sell my 3G as an unlocked iPhone, I have already activated with a legit ATTUsa sim, and installed Blacksn0w, and I want to know if it will work when the buyer inserts a Tmobile Sim.. or if they will need to reinstall blackra1n to get hacktivation..

can someone confirm that after activating with an ATTUsa Sim, and then installing Blacksn0w while the ATT Sim is still installed, will a Tmobile Sim works upon insertion later without needing to re-run blackra1n, nor reinstall blacksn0w once the Tmobile sim is put into the phone?

also fwiw, I can cause the wifi problem on my 3GS by running MyWi. After which I cant get Wifi to my home network. The fix for me was to reset network settings.

My 3G is a little different than the 3GS in how it cooperates with MyWi, it does not seem to lose Wifi after using MyWi, the way the 3GS does..

It is interesting how the 3G and 3GS are different, I would like to learn more about that..

This tells me something is not right with blackra1n rc3 hacktivation (that's why I bold typed hacktivation in that chat log)

blackra1n rc3 detects your device, if it is already activated, it will skip hacktivation. Geohot confirmed this.

I was going to ask you to try that .... Damn.
I don't think it will work.
It's not about blacksn0w, it's all about hacktivation.

I do have an idea.

1. on your phone, restore with 3.1.2
2. jailbreak with blackra1n rc1/rc2 (it does not hacktivate)
3. build custom fw 3.1.2 with pwnagetool with hacktivation
4. restore custom fw
5. run cydia
6. add source b l a c k r a 1 n. c o m
7. install blacksn0w for unlock
8. swap sim to test

some people has wifi issue after using blacksn0w. this is a concern for me.

The main two issue is Youtube and Tethering.

The Conclusion......

For the last 5 hours I have been trying different ways to get this both to work.

One of which we all by now know is that Youtube will NOT work if you do not activate with AT&T Sim Card.

Youtube did not work when I tried to activate/unlock with T-mobile sim card.

But When I used my AT&T Sim Card (One that I originally purchased with Apple iPhone contract) It activated and Youtube worked flawlessly.

So I restored iPhone firmware with itunes, activated with AT&T sim card. (Youtube now works). Then I unlocked with geohots blackra1n and installed cydia. I took out my AT&T Sim card and inserted my T-Mobile Sim card and Everything works excellent.

When you try to install a MobileConfig to enable tethering, YOU WILL LOSE WIFI CAPABILITIES. I tried to reset network settings. I also turned my Wifi off and reset the iPhone and NOTHING, still no wifi. I uninstalled the MobileConfig profile and restarted my iPhone and got back my Wifi.

Geohot did a great job getting his application released to the public, but unfortunately like RC1 and RC2, I was never successful with full capabilities of the iPhone with geohot's method. I will wait for Pwnagetool or some other devteam to release something more stable. I hope this helps everyone.

I am using iPhone 3GS 16gb on firmware 3.1.2 on baseband 05.11.07 unlocked on a windows xp system.

did you try restore a custom fw with hacktivation and use blacksnow via cydia? I wonder if youtube will work .

Also, if you want to do tethering, don't mess with mobileconfig. Use a carrier bundle (see Volkspost's thread on this). FWIW, 3.1.2 + Tethering via ipcc should work. Many people use mobileconfig but that is not preferred way. I am no expert on this carrier bundle vs. mobileconfig ... BUT Volkspost & Aviegas are. I trust both V & A.

OK, I've tried both 3G and 3GS

Didn't try hactivation, ONLY legit activation with at&t sim inside all the time. Run blackra1n, installed cydia and sn0w. The result: Everythings work perfect including youtube, wifi, swap at&t to t-mobile sim. Power off and on again, tried everythings still perfect.
Restored with no sim. Hactivated, run blackra1n, installed cydia and sn0w. Youtube not working, wifi working just fine. Swapping sims both carriers work good. Rebooted it, still same thing. Youtube not working, wifi work great, both sims working.

*3GS*
Hactivated without sim. Run blackra1n, installed cydia and sn0w. Result, youtube doesn't work. Wifi doesn't work properly, must reset network setting everytime it boots (or power off and on).
Restored with at&t sim in. Run blackra1n, installed cydia and sn0w. The result: Everythings work perfect. Youtube great, wifi great, swap sim and work great. Rebooted it to check if everythings still OK and everythings still working 100%

jon_slider, so I don't think it has s/t to do with mywi. Just s/t wrong with the activation/hacktivation step. We must have a at&t sim in order to have 100% working iphone (for now with my iPhones!!!).
Haven't try mywi or tethering yet.

Curious as to what mobileconfig you used? They shouldn't be affecting wifi, especially if they're properly made. If you wouldn't mind trying with your AT&T sim in both of the mobile configs in my tethering tutorial here:

And report if wifi works. Also, if you can, remove the mobileconfigs and try Volkspot's ipcc here: http://appleguru.org/ATT_all_on.ipcc

PS: pretty sure the wifi and youtube bugs are isolated to hacktivation, though your report says you're having wifi issues with a legit activated phone + mobileconfig tethering file? I can't reproduce that here, but my phone is legit activated and on at&t.

Mobileconfigs aren't inherintly bad (nor are ipccs); the problems arise when they're improperly made. Improperly made mobileconfigs (and ipccs) stop things like VVM and MMS from working.

IPCCs have the added benefit of being able to enable the editing of APN information on the phone. MobileConfigs have the added benefit of being easily removed. Other than that, if both files are made with the same settings, the payloads (and thus, their functions) are identical.
