This iPhone is already permanently unlocked. You just need to make sure it is hacktivated when updating to a new version of the OS.

You can create a custom 3.1.2 ipsw with pwnagetool version 3.1.4 and load it to this phone.

I would recommend expert mode

Activate - ticked
Enable baseband update - leave at default setting
Boot neuter - unticked
Custom boot logos - this is a personal decision

the rest can be left at default settings

If you say yes to the question has your phone been pwned before. You should also be able to load the ipsw by simply option (or on windows shift) clicking on restore in iTunes. This way there is no need to put your iPhone in dfu mode.

Just to be clear, the easy mode and default settings will work in pwnagetool. My expert mode suggestion just saves you hunting for 3.9 and 4.6 bootloaders and also the small risk that something goes wrong during the unecessary bootneuter step which you have already done to get your iPhone 2G working on OS 3.0

Also don't forget to enable and then disable push notifications once you load 3.1.2 or your battery life will be abysmal.

If you are on Windows, you have a few options.

1. Restore to 3.0.1 and use Redsn0w to jailbreak/hacktivate using this guide. iClarified - iPhone - How to Unlock/Jailbreak Your iPhone 2G on OS 3.0.x Using RedSn0w (Windows)

2. Borrow a friend's mac, or search around on the net for a pre-made custom ipsw.

3. Wait a couple of days, blackra1n RC3 will support hacktivation and the expected release date is 4th November and you can use that instead.

Yes it will work, because your iPhone is already jailbroken at 2.1

as long as your iPhone was jailbroken with either pwnagetool or redsn0w or quickpwn or blackra1n previously you can shift-restore a custom ipsw created with pwnagetool in iTunes.

It does not matter, you have the pwnagetool logo, that is enough to indicate that you will be okay.

DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT do the steps in Update 5 - it will not work, well maybe for 5 minutes, but never reliably. We think we have reliable fixes for push notifications but it is much more complex and you can't simply install a package from Cydia to fix it.

I would also advise against you doing Update 3, the patch linked here is actually a file from OS 3.1 so you end up with a Frankenstein OS.
