Default 2G on v.2.1; Help me to upgrade plz

Hi guys,

I am on an ancient iphone (2G from the 28th week)

I havent touched it in terms of upgrades now for quite a while and I am completely out of date.

Last time I used pwntool and bootneuter(2.1). At the moment, it is unlocked, jailbrocken, activated and running on iphone 2.1 version.

Now comes the question part:

1) With my current setting, what is the savest way to backup my contacts.
2) After I backuped the contacts, what program/tool should I use to upgrade the phone
3) What is the best version to upgrade to in terms of stability and savety
4) What version of itunes is best to use
5) Are there any important NOT-TO-DO things, I should remember
6) and finally, is there a way how I can export my songs from iphone into an empty itunes library?

Thank you in advance,

Baka

  1. you can sync your iPhone with either iSync on the mac. Windows users can sync with Outlook, Windows Contacts, and Yahoo! Address Book. You can also sync with google contacts if you upgrade to at least iTunes version 7.7 Once you have synced your contacts and verified that they synced okay you should proceed.
  2. You have two options for upgrading. Pwnagetool (this works with almost all firmware versions and allow best flexibility. Redsn0w only supports 3.0.x but is much simpler and faster.

I would recommend going straight to latest iTunes 9.0.2 and iPhone OS 3.1.2 with Pwnagetool. If you don't like it you can always downgrade.
  3. No recent iTunes version is unsafe. 8.2 is the minimum for working with 3.x iPhone and 9 is required for full functionality with iPhones running 3.1.x
  4. When making custom firmware, you don't need bootneuter to be run again, this can be turned off. you do need to tick off activation. Once you have got the new OS running install a free app that supports push notifications (eg BargainBin) run it once to enable push notificiations then go to settings and disable push notifications. This improves battery life.
Do not restore your iPhone from an iTunes backup, this improves battery life.
You are going to lose your call history and SMS history, there is a way to keep this but it is much more complex to explain.
  5. There are plenty of tools that can extract your songs from your iPhone and put them into iTunes. Google this.

Thanks a lot for such a quick reply.

At least now I know where to start from.

2 tiny clarifications:

1) I just dont understand the issue with BargainBin and push notifications. Is it something new to do to improve the battery since I do not remember doing it when i installed 2.1 back in the days.

2) "Do not restore your iPhone from an iTunes backup, this improves battery life." But how to I get the new OS on the phone .... maybe it is a silly question but I am a bit confused. Do I have to use the upgrade function within Itunes or what?

Thank you in advance,

Baka

Redsn0w is only supported on 3.0 and 3.0.1 OS

the best case you have now is 3.1.2 with the kernel from 3.0, this is not good
mix.

You must restore with either custom 3.1.x firmware created with pwnagetool or restore 3.0 or 3.0.1 from apple and then use redsn0w to jailbreak.

Regarding your other two questions

1. Yes push notifications are new in 3.0 and they don't work properly with iPhones that can't be activated though iTunes. On hacktivated iPhones push notifications use an incorrect certificate and try then fail to communicate with apples push servers. This rapidly uses up battery life and even occurs if the data network is not configured on the iPhone.

2. There is a confusing use of the words restore and update when talking about iTunes and the iPhone

you restore or update the iPhone OS via iTunes. Restore loads an OS and wipes all existing data on the iPhone.

Update, upgrades the OS on the iPhone but does not wipe the user data. This is not supported on jailbroken iPhones at the moment.

Restore from iTunes backup refers to an option you get once you have restored the iPhone OS using iTunes. At this point you have no user settings on the iPhone and you have two choices. Setup iPhone as a new or restore from iTunes backup.

It is not essential, but I would recommend that you set up as new an iphone that has been jailbroken before. Jailbroken iPhones can have files in the iTunes backup that should not be restored. Setting up iPhone as new can also help improve battery life and solve strange bugs with the connectivity side of the iPhone.

I have done it.... !! running 3.1.2 (used programs: itunes 9.0.2 , pwnedtool 3.1.4 and iReb 3.1.2)

To help others with simular problem i.e. restoring with cusom firmware

Try the program iReb ... it somehow makes itunes avoid the 1600 error and lets you install custom firmware

good look to everyone
