A long time ago, before iPhone 3G, I had the iPhone EDGE, on AT&T, and was loving everyday with it. I was 17 at the time and was on a family plan with my mom. Over time, AT&T kinda pissed my mom off and she told AT&T to take their service and shove it and at that moment she canceled our lines.
Unknown of even the word "jailbreak" or "unlock" and depresed out of my mind we ended up going to Sprint and to get a semi-decent phone, I sold my iPhone to my mom's ex-husband (who im still on good terms with) to get the money for a good phone
*Time skip*
Im 19, now on T-Mobile on my own, and my moms ex got the new 3GS and gave me back my old iPhone after he completely restored it( to the point iTunes wants it to be reactivated with AT&T). Feeling like I just reunited with an old friend, I've done crazy amounts of research to learn to get it on T-Mobile with me, but to no avail.....
According to my moms ex, the iPhone is on Firmware 3.1.2 (latest one im assuming) Is there any possible why I can activate the phone without a contract with AT&T, get into the OS itself to use it like an iTouch, and if Im amazingly lucky, unlock it to work for T-Mobile
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, thanks in advance!

Easy.
Connect your phone to your computer. Just to be safe, restore the iPhone with Apple's stock 3.1.2 firmware.
After it's restored, you'll still have iTunes trying to activate the phone via ATT. So far so good.
Download Blackra1n. Click on the MAKE IT RAIN button. If you see the Geohotz image, then it means you're jailbreaking your phone. After it's done, you'll still get the emergency call-itunes trying to activate via att. That's ok.
What we've done so far, is jailbreak your phone so you may restore your phone with a custom firmware. Jailbreaking it first, even if it's inactive, would now allow you to restore the custome firmware without error, without dfu mode, or recovery mode.
Download the firmware 3.1.2 for iPhone g2 that's already been activated. Search google. When you have it, connect your iPhone to your computer. Open iTunes.
Now here's they key. Instead of just clicking RESTORE, which would unjailbreak, undoing what we just did, press on your keyboard the SHIFT key. While holding it, click RESTORE.
This will allow you to CHOOSE which firmware you want to use. All you gotta do now on the little window you'll get, is locate the custom firmware you've downloaded. When it finished, your phone would have been activated. You will now be able to use your phone's features like safari via wifi. Youtube via wifi, the ipod for music and such. If you have tmobile, just take out the att simcard and inserts yours.
If not, youll just get the NO SERVICE at the top, but it wont matter. From here, there's a couple of other steps to do if you DO have tmobile and owuld like to add the mms feature, but granded you'll have to have tmobile's mms plan.
