Default Restoring to official firmware

I have a friend with a 2G iPhone which has been unlocked in the past, but was recently restored to 3.1 (unsuccessfully). He wants to use it with an official O2 SIM. I then downgraded it to 3.0 which worked with my O2 contract SIM, but I then had a go at upgrading again to 3.1. When that didn't work I had another go at downgrading to 3.0 but this time unsuccessfully (saying unsupported SIM), although it appears to be working as a phone receiving incoming calls but only showing the emergency screen, needing activation. How do I simply virginize this phone to use an official SIM.

Simply restore using the apple official firmware.
When done, connect phone to itunes and let it activate.
You should be able to do this if you are on official carrier.

I have done this half a dozen times and every time I get "The SIM card inserted in the phone does not appear to be supported". I have also used PwnageTool with the same result, both 3.0 and 3.1.
The SIM card is straight from my O2 contract 3GS.
Is it worth me trying iTunes 8 - and if so, how do I downgrade from 9.

You are not being clear here.
I read your other thread and I think i understand now.
In the other thread, you said you can successfully restore to 3.0 without any problem and then use iTunes to let it activate legitimately.

The problem begins when you apply custom firmware 3.1 to your phone. When you use pwnagetool to create custom firmware 3.1, DO NOT select activation. That way, the custom firmware will not "hacktivate". Build your custom firmware correctly so you can use it with an official activated iphone.
