SamuraiPhone is an unknown quantity at this point
Default Can I just hit update in iTunes if I don't need j/b, only unlock?

Hi,

I've gone through everywhere but I've found nothing. Please could someone clarify that, if I only want to keep the unlock, and I don't need any jailbreaking etc., can I just hit the unlock button in iTunes directly?

OR must I make a custom firmware and restore? It's a lengthy process...

Default No.

Do not use the official firmware update. It cannot be unlocked. See reply to your other post in other thread.

If it's a 2G you've got, it can always be unlocked. The new 3.1 firmware doesn't have a baseband update for the 2G. The simplest way is to get a custom 3.1 IPSW and shift + restore it through iTunes. Google around and I'm sure you'll find something!

This I've tried.....Being new to this Iphone thing I jumped in head first without research and upgraded (hard for me to call it an upgrade as 'Locked-Up' seems more appropriate!) to the 3.1. Does this mean there's no return to 3.0 or 2.1 or anything else? I tried downloading the original firmware with a shift-restore and directing it to the 2.1 but when all was said and done there was no change in OS....3.1 it remains.

Actually, what you've done is upgraded to the original Apple 3.1 IPSW, which will lock your phone. What you need to do is download a custom 3.1 IPSW for the 2G which is already hacktivated and unlocked. Of course, if you have a Mac, you can make your own custom hacktivated IPSW using PwnageTool 3.1

Currently, I do not own a Mac.....but it seems the more I mess with this the closer I am to obtaining one!! So you're saying as for now there is no reversing the 3.1 upgrade because in doing so I 'locked it'. Correct? (unless I knew how to create a custom ipsw) Are there are known hacktivated and unlocked ipsw that will work with the 3.1 I upgraded to last night? Or am I locked up until some brainiac creates one?

Thanks for the info you've already given!

This is just my luck! ha! I tracked this phone for a week since purchase in Washington state via FedEx dot com. And to think I messed up right out of the box within the first 20 minutes in it's new NC home is pitiful. My life story!!!
