Default Restoring to 3.0 to use official SIM

I have a friend who accidentally upgraded an unlocked 2G iPhone to 3.1 (honest, wasn't me) and it is unactivated. He now wants to use it with an O2 Simplicity SIM. I haven't got access to his Simplicity SIM but I am trying to sort it using my own O2 iPhone contract SIM.
When I put it into DFU mode and attempt to copy back either Apple's standard 3.1 FW or a version created by PwnageTool, I get SIM not supported. If I try to copy back 3.0 FW I get "firmware file is not compatible".
Is there any way f doing what I want, I don't need it jailbroken or unlocked.

Hi
The SIM not supported message is normal when you don't have fake activation but backward DFU restoring a 2G with 3.0 fw should be fine..

Make sure the firmware is the correct one for the device.

I have used both iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw and iPhone1,1_3.0.1_7A400_Restore.ipsw.
Both give me "The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported".
Is there any way to truly "virginise" the phone ?

I am now going batty with this. I finally got it working with 3.0 after about ten attempts at restoring firmware. I then stupidly had another go at putting 3.1 on (as I only want to use an official SIM) and had the same problem again (SIM not supported). I have tried several times again to go back to 3.0 and failed every time. How do I do this reliably ?

(a few minutes later)
Just discovered accidentally (by someone ringing me) that I can receive incoming calls on this phone, but I only get the emergency call display. I must be so close to having it working.

If you got a phone which do receives calls, then your phone just need to be activated. As you are not using a SIM card from the expected country/carrier phone was originally bought, you need to do a fake activation. This is usually done when jailbreaking your device. Suggest you to restore your phone to OS 3.0, jailbreak it (which will do the fake activation) and then, if you wish, UPDATE to 3.1.

I have done this umpteen times and always the same result. I have tried PwnageTool 3.0 and 3.1 with firmware 3.0,3.01 and PwnageTool 3.1 with 3.1. I have tried doing an Apple restore first and then using PwnageTool. Always the same, not a supported SIM. I am getting so I could run Pwnageool blindfolded.

All I am missing is activation, is there something that will just do this.
