Default SMS on wifi not working?

i recently got an iphone 2g and unlocked/jailbroke it with os 3. i'm using it on tmobile, and all features seem to be working fine, except that i can't sent texts if i am connected to a wifi network with no phone reception (works fine if i do have reception, however, there's no reception at my house so this was pretty important to me). i just get the red exclamation point and tells me to try again. since i haven't used it before, maybe i am mistaken and this is something i can't actually do through wifi when using tmobile, but i don't see why i shouldn't be able to if people do it using at&t (and tmobile users with tmobile phones can...)? wifi is working for everything else without phone reception, just not texting. is there a setting somewhere i'm missing or something?

thanks :]

I'm sorry, but are you stupid normally, or do you have to practise?
What kind of a question is this?
Obviously, you need phone reception to send text messages... They go over the phone network. Nothing to do with wifi at all...
And since when has anyone else been able to send texts/make normal cell phone calls over wifi? They haven't, because it's a phone feature, not anything to do with the internet.
Some people...

you know, generally people don't go out of their way to answer questions they know nothing about, but if you get your kicks from making yourself look like an idiot on a public forum i guess i won't knock it...

since when? since i talked to tmobile a few days ago [when i was trying to decide whether to get a legit tmobile phone or use an unlocked iphone] and several of their phones do it and they showed me? since i've sent text messages from someone's blackberry connected to their home wifi network in an area with no reception in a 5 mile radius? since i've received text messages from someone on a iphone (at&t) in rural texas (read: no reception)?

so since i obviously knew it could be done and didn't know why i wasn't doing it, i figured i'd ask. today i asked apple while i was at the store buying a case, leaving out the part where i was using tmobile. they said it's completely possible, my problem being that it works with a different app, not the one that came with the phone. so yeah, i'm pretty sure that that's since when everyone else has been sending texts over wifi. and notice i didn't say anything about phone calls because i know that can't be done on the iphone (however it *can* be done on some blackberries).

some people indeed...

Oh... I'm sorry... I know nothing about this...
</sarcasm>
That requires you to buy something else, called Femtocell.
