Post GUIDE: MMS on 2G

For everyone thats been having problems getting this working, I spent most of yesterday and today fooling around with it, and finally have it working. My biggest problem was that Cellular Data Network menu was not showing up, so I couldn't enable mms or input any fields to the APN. So here it is step by step, this should get most of you going that have had trouble

1) Add these sources to Cydia:

cydia.alpden.com

apt.iphone-storage.de

2) From the Iphone-Storage repo, install "CB US ATT" package. This is the US AT&T carrier bundle, which added the cellular data network menu in my settings. If you are not on AT&T US, you probably need to install a carrier bundle relative to whatever carrier you are using. I cannot offer support other than ATT US.

3) Reboot phone

4) From the alpden repo, install the "ActivateMMS2G" package. Cydia will prompt you for reboot once installed.

5) After Reboot, head to Settings>General>Network>Cellular Data Network

Cellular Data and Visual Voicemail should have "wap.cingular" for the APN (again only for ATT US)

MMS should have "wap.cingular" for APN, "http://mmsc.cingular.com" for the MMSC, and "wireless.cingular.com" for the MMS Proxy.

6) Reboot phone, then double check that the settings you have entered have stuck. If they have go ahead and check your messaging app, and see if you get the camera icon. Try and send an MMS to someone who is able to recieve to check if it works. I have experienced a few crashes when sending MMS but the message usually still sends.

** IF YOU ARE ON AN AT&T IPHONE PLAN **
You will need to get ahold of another phone that you can stick your sim card in and call ATT. Put your sim in the other phone, check your voicemail and send a few texts, then dial 611 to get to ATT CS. Tell them that you got rid of your iPhone and want to switch over to a medianet plan. In my area it is $30/mo for unlimited text and data. They will ask for the IMEI of the phone, then do a little typing and switch your account to that phone and plan. Once that is finished you can pop your sim back in the iPhone and hopefully enjoy some MMS

Now about that tethering.....

Default *also*

If your MMS start to fail sending, reset your network settings from the reset menu.

Default What don't we get?

Question: when I first started using my iPhone 2G on AT&T, I swapped out my SIM from SE810 and off I went. However, I was not getting VVM. And I -had- MMS (on the SE). A few ours later I checked my AT&T online account, and lo-and-behold the system noticed that I was using an iPhone and MMS stopped working...EVEN on my SE!

Have you seen this?

Also, by switching to the MediaNET plan, did you lose VVM?

AT&T knows when you have an iPhone because of the IMEI. Visual voicemail does not work on the medianet plans, as far as I know. Another option, from what I have read, is calling up AT&T and telling them you are a registered iPhone developer and would like to test your MMS app you are making. They should enable the MMS on your iPhone plan. Gonna try this because with the medianet plan I am getting lots of failed sends, so I will post the results of that once I do it.

Default Yup, what I thought

Yeah, sounds like what I had thought. When I first started using my 2G iPhone, I called AT&T specifically and told them I wanted to stay on my MediaNET plan with MMS 1) because I was out of contract and didn't want another 2 year commitment and 2) I wanted the MMS to stay on my plan because I was planning on swapping SIMs between the phones to use my 3MP Sony camera phone that I had bought unlocked, full price. The AT&T rep said "Fine, everything will be okay."

My first outing with the camera phone a few days later resulted in non-functional MMS. I called AT&T and was told, basically, "too bad, won't work." SwirlyMMS had my hopes up til then. So I gave up. A few months later I got a rep that put me on iPhone data without commitment (which got me VVM) so I've not really looked back since.

AT&T is, for some reason, purposefully locking-out MMS if they sense an iPhone IMEI. That is the reason I am -personally- under the conspiracy theorist idea that this no-MMS hate that Apple has been getting has been just about 100% AT&T's fault.

Default yayy

this does work, however when i put the apn into cellular data and mms, after i rebooted the phone the earpiece wouldnt work. i deleted activatemms2g and the repos and it works fine now. is there any other way to send and rec mms without contacting at&t?? i am a GoPhone user and don't want them to ban my use of the iPhone, which they've tried.

When sending, it gets stuck, ii lose networs service, and get the error message saying to try again, btw.
