Hi,
I have upgraded to 3.0, loaded the carrier settings, have nice carrier logo, carrier services, EDGE editing and all, but no tethering. I read and read on google and it seems to be related to EDGE, but I am sure there is a way to make it work somehow. I used to tether over EDGE and its great to download my email headers on the go, etc. Is there something I can set in the carrier bundle that would trigger EDGE as an "allowed" connection method for tethering? Thanks Ben |

Nope, nothing in the carrier bundle for iPhone 2G, no option as of now to use Apples Tethering option on the first generation iPhone. I would guess it is sitting in one of the binaries but I have not looked into it so far.

I've got the Internet Tethering showing in the 2g. I also got the connection Apple adapter in Windows, but says network cable is unplugged.
It seems to be controlled by /usr/libexec/misd (Mobile Internet Share). Modifying the Library/Preferences/com.apple.MobileInternetSharing.plist State entry to 1023 (as per h**p://www.iget.dk/?p=234) seems to add the toggle, but something is missing. I did add the tethering info to my carriers.plist, but maybe is wrong and hence the network cable unplugged error. If you cannot get the toggle within networks, kill the misd and try again. I will keep playing with it and see if I can make it works. |

I can't get it to work either on my iPhone 2G.
SSH'ing into that file and altering to value to 1023 enables the toggle, gets my macbook to add another network interface, but then it says the cable is unplugged. I assume that's because it's waiting for me to get 3G reception. I have the modified carrier mobileconfig file that should enable tethering, so I guess that's not the problem. My guess is that we'll probably need another hack to have it use the EDGE connection instead of 3G. Or does the danish guy from the link above here claim that he's got it working? (my danish is a little rusty, and so is google translate's danish) By the way, I know EDGE speeds will be terrible, but that wouldn't matter in an emergency where I have no internet but need to check on something. Seems like progress is being made, well done!
So when you enable tethering the toggle shows up, but it does nothing? I am sure that its waiting for some 3G signal. I have a feeling that there must be a different switch in the carrier bundle which would enable tether over EDGE, it would just need to be enabled "<true> -ed". Ben |

I don't believe there is any other key in the carriers.plist to enable this.
Apparently misd fails when i tries to start the broadcast service (from syslog): Jun 21 18:31:49 iPhone misd[77]: creating internal interface (broadcast) devname en1 Jun 21 18:31:49 iPhone misd[77]: creating external interface (pdp) devname ext-pdp-0 Jun 21 18:31:49 iPhone misd[77]: creating service com.apple.MobileInternetSharing.broadcast-0 Jun 21 18:31:49 iPhone misd[77]: invalidating cached carrier provisioning state Jun 21 18:31:49 iPhone misd[77]: carrier service is not available Jun 21 18:31:49 iPhone misd[77]: invalidating cached carrier provisioning state Jun 21 18:31:49 iPhone misd[77]: carrier service is not available Jun 21 18:31:49 iPhone misd[77]: invalidating cached carrier provisioning state Jun 21 18:31:49 iPhone misd[77]: carrier service is not available Jun 21 18:31:49 iPhone misd[77]: PDP[nowait]: Operation not supported Jun 21 18:31:49 iPhone misd[77]: unable to start com.apple.MobileInternetSharing.broadcast-0: Operation not supported Jun 21 18:31:49 iPhone misd[77]: destroying service com.apple.MobileInternetSharing.broadcast-0 Jun 21 18:31:49 iPhone misd[77]: destroying internal interface (broadcast) devname en1 Jun 21 18:31:49 iPhone misd[77]: destroying external interface (pdp) devname ext-pdp-0 It'd be interesting to see how some of the plists and interfaces are in a 3g with working tethering. I think this guide may be lead to the solution:
1) get a developer-activated iPhone 3G 2) connect to the phone with dtrace (or Instruments) 3) enable tethering 4) watch which files are accessed 5) compare these files with the 2G firmware 6) make the needed changes ![]() I have two problems with this: I don't have time and don't have a 3G
