As I know this thing was enabled in early 3.0 betas on all devices.
So such a calls can be present only as a protection. And can be patched out.
True Hackers, please, where are you?

Which version exactly? This is the first I've heard of this.
If it's true, then it would indeed be a quick fix.

Default Possible update !!!

Ok guys ... I stumbled onto something VERY Interesting ...

Ive been using PDAnet to tether to my computers for basic Internet access.
Well, Tonight my GF is using my laptop[my primary computer] to play sims 3 ...

So, bored as I am ... I decide to install Desktop PDAnet onto this old desktop to pass the time before I get my lappy back ...

Well ... In my recent quest to get my 2G iphone to tether natively, i decided to edit the internetsharing.plist file to state 1023, integer 2 [like everyone else has done to get the Tethering screen open] ...

* This desktop is running iTunes 8.0.2.20 * *My laptop is running iTunes 8.2.x.xx *

ONLY THIS TIME ON CONNECTING MY iPHONE, THE TETHERING SCREEN [TOGGLE AND ALL] DOESNT GO AWAY !

take for granted, the tethering does not work, but the screen remains ...

which has me seriously thinking since usually my tethering option disappears once I connect to my laptop running itunes 8.2.x.xx [whether or not itunes is running] ...

DOES THE PROBLEM LAY WITHIN ITUNES OR FILES ITUNES 8.2.x.xx WRITES TO COMPUTERS ???? OR HOW iTUNES AND THE iPHONE "TALK" TO EACH OTHER ON 8.2.x.xx ???

Also Just found This Out ...

"the iTunes 8.2 Pre-release 2 update no longer allows the editing of carrier files, meaning no more tethering options"

A Coincidence Between The iPhone and iTunes Communication ? I Dunno ...

I think it has to with the iTunes preferences to upload your own carrier settings.

You can re-enable injecting carrier settings aka custom carrier bundles.
http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/f127/78031.htm

With the MMS hack the iPhone 2G will be MMS capable then. Tethering seems to be another story. Carrier settings have to be correct of cause if you want to use tethering. If you check with users on a legit iPhone contract, 3G and 3G/GS users use the same carrier bundle (from Apple). Even those where the carrier allows tethering wont tether if on a 2G.

Here Adrian Fogge said that he had tethering working in beta 2.
AFIAK MMS & Tethering was first disabled for 2g iphones in Beta 3.

UPDATE :

Dunno If anyone else has been Able to do this, but The MobileInternetsharing.plist file [ The one where you change from 1020 to 1023 so the toggle appears ], I was able to edit something inbetween that file and all the other Tethering files within my iphone ... so now MobileInternetsharing.plist goes unchanged from the 1023 state even after a reboot of the phone ...

Once I can track down that file I changed ... I fill everyone in ...

Dunno if anyone else has been able to do this, Just wanted to share ...

also, I believe ive read on here some of you guys actually got the toggle to stay on even after plugging the iphone in and opening iTunes ... if so, How did you guys do that ???
