new to the iPhone, and looking for a guide to enabled mms.
What I'm looking for is a guide or knowledge on how to upgrade to 3.1.2 and activate mms. I don't really know what I'm doing yet but I am somewhat computer savy. I went searching through some of the threads here but I at a loss as to what needing to find as every thing I find says something about 2.1.2(?).

Can I install a certain fw, like install 3.1.2 instead of upgrading to the current version, then enable mms.

Any assistance would be greatly appriciated.

Swirly MMS should work fine

I don't believe there were ever any patches posted for OS 3.1, you need either OS 3.0, 3.1.2. or 3.1.3 as there are MMS patches posted for these OS versions.

My recommendation is to upgrade to OS 3.1.2 and apply the MMS patches from dborca.

Ok, I was following a guide here: Jailbreak, Activate and Unlock Original iPhone 2G 3.1.3 Firmware Using redsn0w [Windows/Mac] | iLikeMyiPhone

My iPhone is now running 3.1.3 in a kinda sorta unlocked state. I have access to the phone, but now I don't have service. I noticed that the carrier information is empty with it searching for service.

The basics of what I did was to update to 3.1.3 (7E18), then I used redsn0w to unlock and jailbreak, thinking I was going to be restoring to 3.1.2 when it was finished running. I don't know what I did wrong. Again, any advice would be greatly appreciated. I do have a question pending to the person who wrote the guide, but I'm undersanding that this is the place where redsn0w was created so I'm also asking for help here also.

Also, another question. Should my sim card be out of the phone, or will it not make any difference for the unlocking/jailbreaking. I know I should have asked this earlier, but it just now came to mind

HA HA HA! Ok, I'm at a loss. I went to try to restore my Iphone again, but my computer crashed and shut off during the process. At that point all I could do was restore to new and try to unlock again. I followed the guide mentioned below to restore to 3.1.2 and it worked just fine. I now have service on the prepaid account. Down side is that I lost everything on the phone, but I'm happy to have the phone working again. I can get everything put back on the phone later. Now my goal is to unlock mms, and bluetooth.

For correct autdetection of whether or not to hacktivate you should have your SIM card inserted during jailbreak.

Thank you! I can't seem to find where the patches for mms from dborca that you mentioned earlier. I can find plenty of pages that mention it, but I can't seem to find where the patches are. Could you help point me in the right direction?

Again, I stumble upon the answer (cool!!)? I don't know, I came across a 5 step thing taking me to cydia and installing a source that ended up having me add "iPhone 2G: Tethering, MMS, bluetooth profile" (I'm thinking this is the one you were talking about), rebooted, now i have ability to add photos, but it isn't actually sending.
