Someone gave me an AT&T activated 3G iPhone with 3.0.1.
He asked me to unlock to use the phone in the eu but I had to save all the data (if possible incl. last calls, messages, game high-scores, settings)

So, this time, I tried to do the redsn0w 0.8 procedure, but before running redsn0w, I did an update instead of a restore!
The good thing was that the phone was still activated after the update and everything (apps/data) was still on the phone.
(with a previous unlock, I did a restore and o.c. lost activation, lost all apps and lost all the data)

So the 3G AT&T 3.0.1 iPhone is now unlocked without losing 1 bit of data and so far it seems that Everything works!

I can call, receive incoming calls, etc .. I have to admit that I didn't test everything yet, but again everything I did test works.

Why is it that in every post, in every tutorial, .. people talk about a (shift) restore instead of a (shift) update?
Is there a possible accident (brick phone, lost 3G ability, .. ?) that can happen?

Fyi: I used:
Win XP SP2, ITunes 8.2.0.23 (FW 3.0.1),
redsn0w 0.8 (pointed to older FW 3)
in Cydia installed latest ultrasn0w (version from dd 08/27/2009)

Updating can bring underlining problems from the previous firmware versions into your new install. Against DFU or full restoring makes sure you start from a totally fresh device.

So where possible people tend to suggest DFU as the best option to avoid any troubles.

i m having a real hard time every time i m running redsn0w in my 3G. its crashing in my vista and i m doing update instead of SHIFT+RESTORE. u have a point.
