Default 3G iphone 3.0.1 - unlock, best way?

I received a 3G iphone 3.0.1 (7A400, FW: 04.26.08)
I don't know if he upgraded or bought the iPhone like that, anyway it is 3.0.1 and I know I was more lucky with a 3.0 version, that's not the point here..
It's activated via AT&T, but now they have to use it in the EU for a long time, so I guess I have to go through the redsn0w 0.8 proces.

What is the best way to do this:
(I allready read somewhere XP SP2 is the best windows OS to do this.)

1. Run iTunes v8.2 hold shift and downgrade to 3.0 and then use redsn0w 0.8 with the same 3.0 .ipsw-file?
(are there problems with this downgrade proces?)
2. Run iTunes v8.2 hold shift and restore to 3.0.1 and then use redsn0w 0.8 with the (old) 3.0 .ipsw-file?
3. Just run redsn0w 0.8 with the 3.0 .ipsw-file?
4. Run redsn0w 0.8 using the 3.0.1 .ipsw-file?

And yes later I install ultrasn0w, but what proces should I use first?

Default More info..

On:
iPhone 3.0.1: Jailbreak and Unlock

They say the best way is to use the 3.0 .ipsw-file, but
where:
1. in iTunes 8.2 AND redsn0w
2. in iTunes 8.2 you use .ipsw 3.0.1 and in redsn0w use .ipsw 3.0
3. only in redsn0w (and don't restore in iTunes)

can someone give feedback please?
I can't just trial and error because it's not my phone..

Question Confusing

Thank you for your answer.

But the next sentence is exact what's confusing me:
** If you would like to jailbreak on the 3.0.1 firmware you can follow these exact instructions; however, in Step Two use this 3.0.1 iPhone firmware file instead of the 3.0 one. Continue with the instructions as indicated.**

So on Iclarified they suggest that you have to open 3.0.1 in iTunes and point to 3.0 in redsn0w.

Still the same question:
Do I have to restore in iTunes or can I just open redsn0w 0.8 and point to .ipsw 3.0?
(this way I don't have to restore, by restoring I loose all the data on the phone, right?)

Restore in iTunes to 3.0.1. Then, open redsn0w and point to 3.0.

And and regarding to your question, yes, but you can sync all your stuff back back.

If you don't know the background of this particular iPhone, restore is strongly recommended

Smile Crystal

Thanks, that's a clear answer, I'm going to test this asap.

Restoring to .ipsw 3.0.1 after that redsn0w 0.8 and point to .ipsw 3.0
It doesn't sound not logic to me, but I think I get it.

I restore in iTunes to 3.0.1 (in order to +/- restoring to the same .ipsw as redsn0w expects AND by doing this I don't mess up the phone with earlier settings AND I still have the SMS fix in the file)

and in redsn0w 0.8 I point to .ipsw 3.0, because redsn0w only works with that file.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks again, I'll put the result in a final post.

Thumbs up Succeeded!

I'm back with good news!

I finally have a 3G with FW:3.0.1, activated, jailbroken, unlocked
(and cydia on board)

It was definately option 2:

Run iTunes v8.2 ( hold shift and restore 3.0.1 )
and then
use redsn0w 0.8 with the (older!) 3.0 .ipsw-file?

More info: I used win XP SP2, ITunes 8.2.0.23

Special thanks to: duck9000 and gkscit, both great members of this forum, I appreciate your answers, you guys convinced me to choose for option 2 and it all went well.
