Hi guys, my wife has an iPhone that I am playing around with, which I hope I have not broken.

The phone's earlier version was 2.2.1, which I updated to what I believe is 3.0.1. After the supposed update, the phone needed to be reactivated (?) and since I don't have an AT&T SIM registered against this phone, I tried hacktivating it.

After scouring the internet on the best way to do it, I found that redsn0w would give me what I am looking for but everytime I restore the iPhone and then try using redsn0w, I get the following error: unable to recognize specified IPSW.

What am I doing wrong here?

I'll admit that I am a noob when it comes to the iPhone but I've looked everywhere for an answer before posting here and haven't been successful.

Once you run redsn0w and he asks for the ipsw file, instead of pointing to the 3.0.1 file, do it to the 3.0 file.

You can download that ipsw from the net in many sites. Goggle a little for that.
