I have read the post on the iPhone dev team site that we should never upgrade the iPhone 3GS to OS 3.1, because we'll permanently lose the ability to SIM unlock.

But I just bought a brand new iPhone and it already has 3.1 installed. Does this mean it can never be jailbroken and SIM unlocked?

Or, when the team releases the next redsnow supporting 3GS, will I be able to jailbreak and unlock it then?

There is a new jailbreak being developed by another iPhone jailbreak team. This is called greenpois0n and when it is released it will be the only way you can jailbreak your 3.1 out of the box iPhone.

You will not be able to unlock your phone now, or possibly ever as there is no unlock available for the radio baseband that ships with 3.1 and it looks to be much harder to find a way to unlock this baseband than it was with older 3.0 and 2.2 baseband unlocks.

I just bought the iPhone 3GS and I haven't yet opened it. I bought from the Apple store online.

Does anyone who just bought a 3GS know if the iPhones being sent out are 3.1 yet or still 3.0.1? That is, were they made in the last month or so?

If it's 3.1 I'll just send it back.

I bought a 3gs and out of the box it had 3.1 on it. Still waiting for the 3gs 3.1 jailbreak.

It sounds like the jailbreak will be coming in the next few days.

But if the SIM unlock is harder for the new baseband, I hope they do try and unlock it for all the new iPhone owners out there (September 09 onwards) who have no choice but to use OS 3.1.

where did you here about the update to the redsn0w for the 3gs-3.1

The first full jailbreak available for 3GS running 3.1 will not be redsn0w it will be a new jailbreak released by ChronicDev and is team called greenpois0n. This will be very similar to redsn0w or QuickPwn in the way it works. ChronicDev played a big part in the iPodTouch jailbreak which later formed the foundation for the untethered 3Gs jailbreak. Seperately the Dev Team will release an updated PwnageTool to allow those who are jailbroken on 3.0 or 3.0.x to safely restore to a jailbroken 3.1. This will not jailbreak factory 3.1 3GS phones.

Both these programs are being updated and tested. They will be released when they are ready. They will offer different solutions for different problems.

At this point Redsn0w will only be updated if the Dev Team independently find the same exploit that ChronicDev has already found. It is unfortunate that this thread has been created in the redsn0w forum.

Don't expect any more jailbreak tools from GeoHot for a while (purplera1n, purplesn0w) he has gone back to college.

Oober Goober!!! Used pwnage tool 3.1.3 on a redsn0w, jailbroken 3GS, 3.0....thinking I could update to 3.1.

iTunes won't let me restore back to 3.0 and the phone is now bricked!!!

You can upgrade to 3.1 with pwnagetool but ONLY by option/shift clicking on "restore" in iTunes. Clicking on "upgrade" will not work.

The dev team warn against this...

Don't try to "update" to custom ipsw

"the upgrade ramdisk is removed from custom ipsw, mostly due to complications with cydia"

I would suggest you put the phone into recovery mode again and try to "restore" to the same 3.1 custom IPSW. This will probably work.

If this does not work and you have your 3.0 ECID SHSH on file with Cydia then you should be able to restore to 3.0 in iTunes.

Otherwise your only option is to go into DFU and restore to an official 3.1 losing jailbreak and unlock.

I agree with Olethros. It is possible to upgrade to 3.1 with pwnagetoo but not doing restore through itunes. You can try jailbreaking the phone. If you do so your problem may be fixed.
