The 3G can be unlocked with UltraSn0w using a custom FW created on a Mac with Pwnage 3.1 preserving the BB from 3.0

Make sure you do NOT upgrade to 3.1 in iTunes !

I, like you, depend on a custom ipsw to the upgrade. Do you have any link to one?

Hi Cofi I upgraded last week and my ipsw is not for sharing, sorry. Plenty of people are sharing them at MMi though.

I enjoy reading your posts, thanks for your contributions to the community.

I have a 3G on FW 3.0.1, redsn0w/Ultrasnow unlocked and working on Tmobile USA, I use iTunes 8.2 on a Power PC TiPowerbook.

My questions before going to FW3.1 using Pwnage are

1. Is iTunes 9 required, and will it work on my PowerPC (non Intel Mac), or can I stay at iTunes 8.2 to restore to the Custom FW 3.1 IPSW I have created with Pwnage 3.1

2. What is the benefit of FW 3.1?

Im waiting for a few more guinea pigs. So far the negative reports on 3.1 include
1. The carrier logo dissapears
2. Tethering stops working
3. iTunes 9 DELETES firmware prior to 3.1!!!

There is only one new feature that barely interests me, as a 3G iPhone user.
1. Claimed faster wifi speed

Almost every other new feature has to do with making it easier to spend money at the Apple Store, apps, ringtones, mobile me..

Then theres one new feature that would benefit me if I had a 3GS
1. Use Voice Control on iPhone 3GS with Bluetooth headsets

I would stay clear of iTunes 9 until after you've upgraded - then go to 9 for the added features. My phone seams quicker with 3.1 and I certainly get much better WiFi signal. The loss of carrier logo is no big deal - mine was customised with SBSettings before I upgraded and came back when I restored. Tethering - I've never used (even though it is included in my data plan) - it only disappears if you have a provider that doesn't support it as carrier bundles now need to be signed. iTunes 9 deletes all ipsw files other than the current one in the iTunes folder. Just store them elsewhere or download them when you need them. Winterboard was having problems but I believe most have been sorted now. I've been using 3.1 for nearly a week now and would say it is better than 3.01

sorry, not sure I follow, upgraded my powerPC Mac, or upgraded to FW 3.1 using iTunes 8.2, or 9.0?

which added features do you like in iTunes 9?

what is your iPHonespeedtest.com result, mine is in the low 500's, Im on a 3G iPhone

I recommend to put old carrier name using FakeCarrier.

This is not a fix, but, works.

I might add that the loss of carrier logo is only happening on the 3G iPhone.

The Carrier Logo is Ok on the 2G Phone:

I think this is due to the "wrong" Baseband maybe, which uses a different technique to report the Carrier to the Firmware then the Firmware expects ?

yes, I used Erica Sadun's Make it Mine to do the same thing..

my nickname is now my carrier name.. just for fun..
