Ok this may sound stupid, but none the less - i recently purchased an iphone annoying it came as an OTB 3.1 so i know there is no unlock currently for this phone and as i have an orange sim does not work. But i know orange are releasing there iphone soon - sometime this month i believe. So would it be possible to change the firmware on the my current o2 locked phone with the orange firmware so that it would allow the phone to use the orange sim?

Maybe you could provide some extra info making it easier to help you without guessing; which phone model(3gS I guess), which country (UK by the sound of it)

By the way, was your previous phone a WinMobile PDA/phone? Another guess from my side, based on your understanding that an iPhone has branded firmware.

Hi there, thanks for the response. Yes the model that i have is an Iphone 3gs 3.1 running modem version 05.11.07 and yes i am based in the U.K. My previous phone was a smartphone. But the thing i am trying to understand would it be possible to take the firmware from an Orange iphone 3gs (when it is released, which will be most likely running the same modem version and firmware version 3.1.2) then put it on my iphone 3gs. Would this allow me to use my orange sim card?

Have to disapoint you, works like that for smartphones but not for iPhones.

You will have to wait for a network unlock method which works on 3GS with officially updated or out of box 3.1 version....

Hope this will still be possible as in an exploit will be found, good luck with the wait.

When Orange joins the iPhone train in the UK (allegedly very soon), then you should be able to activate your phone through iTunes with an Orange sim.
This works for O2 and all things being equal, this will hopefully be the case with Orange.
