There is a thread about checking serial numbers on the box. Do a search, it should be easy to find.

iPhones manufactured after week 36 have 3.1

check for the 4th and 5th digit of the serial number.... if it is 36 or earlier you will get a 3.0.1 or even lucky a 3.0 OTB

unfortunately mine wasn't

Serial numbers help if you're clearly in the 3.0.x or 3.1 range. However, if it's weeks 36-37, you could get either one.

Back in the early JB days, I remember there was a way to check by getting an unactivated phone to the point it would make emergency calls and then typing a string of numbers/symbols to get an info screen with firmware and bb versions. Search the forum. That process was posted in a lot of places and may still be around. It was so long ago, I can't remember exactly what to do anymore or I'd tell you.

No it was this:
  1. Slide the emergency lock.
  2. Dial *#307#
  3. Press the back button to clear the number you just dialed, then press 0. Press Dial again.
  4. Press accept call, then press hold, then press deny.
  5. You’re now in the contact list!
Was used for the TIFF exploit based web jailbreak. That was OS 1.1.2 I think

I just tested it, it doesn't work on a 3.1 iPhone 3GS. Fails at step 3.
Apple must have fixed it somewhere along the way. Can someone try that with 3.0 or 2.2 and see where Apple fixed it? I don't think it was fixed until the 3.x series.

Default This iswhat you need!

I figered this out some days ago:

Dl the latest QickPWN release! I know it was for 2.2.1 only but It´ll work. Follow the instrucktions untill it promts you to select a firmware. The will be written something like this: "...firmware beginning with X.X" where X.X is your FW!
