Question Confusion about upgrading to 3.1

Hi, I have a jailbroken 3GS on AT&T. I'm running firmware 3.0, and would like to upgrade to 3.1. Unfortunately, I don't remember if I jailbroke my phone with purplera1n or redsn0w, and I'm afraid that might affect my 3.1 jailbreak. Does it matter if my phone was jailbroken with purplera1n, in order for my pwned 3.1 firmware to work (I already created the custom IPSW)? If not, how would I change my jailbreak to one that would be saved during my upgrade to 3.1? BTW, my phone is NOT on Saurik's server, so I can't restore to 3.0 or 3.0.1.

Thanks for any help!

It does not matter if you jailbroke using redsn0w or purplera1n. The custom 3.1 from pwnagetool will work with both.

When making the custom firmware, say yes to the "do you have an iTunes contract that would activate normally through iTunes"

Make sure you use the restore button in iTunes not the update button and it all should work fine.

If you're on 3.0 and jailbroken, you can use your custom firmware to upgrade via iTunes directly.

If you're not sure whether you are jailbroken or not, look at your Springboard and see if you have Cydia and/or Icy. If their there, you are jailbroken.

If not, jailbreak first, then use your custom firmware to upgrade.

However, if you are not jailbroken, and attempt to upgrade using your custom firmware, iTunes will give you an error and your iPhone will be stuck in Recovery Mode loop. This happened to me and fortunately I fixed it.

Oh, and be careful not to upgrade your baseband if you want to unlock using ultrasn0w - choose this option while creating the custom fw.

Good luck

Hi,

I have a factory unlocked iPhone with FW 3.0 and made my jailbreak using purplera1n. Only the 3.1 file is on Saurik“s server.
Now I have two questions:

1. What happens if I answer YES to the question "do you have an iTunes contract that would activate normally through iTunes"? Will the baseband be upgraded to the newest version? Does the new baseband have any advantages for me or is it better to say NO?

2. What do I do if I have a problem with the iPhone in the future and have to restore it? Will the jailbreak stay forever if I always use the custom Firmware to restore the phone?

Thanks,
Chris

I am in the same situation. Have done the upgrade. Answered yes to "contract that would activate normally through itunes". Baseband not upgraded. Phone still works fine. Factory unlocked users need to say yes to this question. If you say no the reports are that you get "no service" after restore.

Regarding new baseband:
Advantages: It is hard to say. New baseband is better tested with 3.1. It is possible the newer baseband can be more optimized for real world network conditions.

Disadvantages: right now it's a command line, manual operation to upgrade the baseband to 05.11.07 and also retain jailbreak.
Some say keeping the old baseband is the reason for the cosmetic problem with no operator logo displayed on 3.1

Yes as long as you restore custom firmware you stay pwned and thus you can be jailbroken.

In reality, this does not matter so much because a jailbreak for OTB 3.1 will be released very soon. Then us factory unlocked types can simply restore to official apple 3.1 and then jailbreak with greenpois0n or whatever geohot's jailbreak will be called.
