I got an 3GS with OS 3.1 and baseband 05.11.07. Can it be jailbroken and unlocked to work on T-Mobile.

Sorry to give bad news but you are completely out of luck right now.

Jailbreak will be possible when greenpois0n is released (that is coming sometime soon)

Unlock, may never be possible for that baseband version and there is no way to downgrade it.

What if I downgrade to 3.0 from 3.1, will I be able to jailbreak it then?

There is no known jailbreak as of now for firmware 3.1 for the 3gs

There is no possible way to downgrade from 3.1 to 3.0 on that baseband without it being previously unocked with your shsh on sauriks server.

Apple doesnt sign 3.0 anymore which prevents you from doing this.

My question is how exactly is an iphone 3GS come with 3.1 firmware out of the box? From my understanding the device comes as an empty shell with nothing on it till you plug it into itunes to load up the firmware/os. So is it not possible then to have a custom firmware created using any jailbreak tools such as Pwnage or redsnow to start off the load up of the operating system upon an iphone 3GS' first time powering up. Thus making it able to be both jailbroken and unlocked. I would greatly appreciate any feedback and information on the inquiry.

all iphones always came with a the latest firmware already loaded. Therefore all new 3G and 3GS comes with the newest software.
