Default 3GS First Impressions

Hey, how are all you guys doing with your new toys? I just got back from my local Apple store with a 32GB model.

I have to say, I'm enjoying the 3G to 3GS upgrade much more than I ever enjoyed the 2G to 3G upgrade. First of all, the new iPhone is a LOT faster doing pretty much everything, they're not kidding about that. I knew things would be a little peppier, but I was amazed at how fast all my stuff synced over, and how much smoother the entire phone software is. If you've ever used the iPhone simulator and noticed that animations were much more fluid than those on the actual hardware, that's what the iPhone 3GS is like now.

The oleophobic screen stays pretty clean, and it also feels much nicer on your finger.

Voice control works, seems like kind of a gimmick if you ask me, but I've never really felt a need for it either.

The camera is really nice. Macro mode is something that I've wanted for a long time, and to finally get it is great. The video camera is pretty high quality compared to other cell phones, I'd say just shy of FlipVideo level, perhaps equal to FV in good conditions, which is more than enough IMHO. In poor light conditions, the framerate drops to about 15fps, and occasionally the video will stutter as the phone does something else in the background. If you're outside on a sunny day, video is amazingly fluid and very high quality. If you're indoors and lighting is good, you'll probably be satisfied with the results as well save some occasional hiccups. Low light performance is great for a cell phone camera, don't get me wrong, but don't expect dedicated camcorder level results.

So, how are you guys faring? Any other 3G to 3GS upgraders? 2G upgraders? Dare I ask, newbies to the iphone scene?

EDIT: updated the camera section a bit

i have to say im absolutely LOVING the speed on this thing and the fact that i got 32 gigs tells me i dont ever have to worry about filling this thing up

tethering over 3G is ridiculously fast, in fact im typing this in the middle of nowhere tethering now with full bars and its amazing

bluetooth stereo is great, although seems to have some bugs where it doesnt play when you press play on the headphones, and have to switch from speaker to headphones to make it work, and you cannot change the song from the phones themselves.

i am kinda disappointed in battery life, although i have been doing ALOT of stuff, i went from 100% to about 81% a little over an hour - hour and 10 mins... just listening to bluetooth, beating a level in sonic, and checking train times.. but then again im really picky with my battery. it just kinda seems to die faster when doing stuff than the old 3g did.

but yeah blazing fast, camera is amazing, uploading to youtube is a BREEZE! fricken awesome phone.

Out of the box, the phone booted very quickly. Much faster than the 3G, which I guess is the point. The whole restore process wasn't quite as seamless as I was hoping for, as the Video recording mode originally didn't shoe up in the camera interface.

It was only after another restart that the camera functionality started working as advertised. Apple claims that the issue was a known issue on the 3GS when a phone call is made immediately after setup and before restoring a backup from iTunes, but that it resolves itself on next launch.

Aside from that, everything works exactly as expected, only quite a bit faster than we're used to.

Oh, and the compass... Turns out that at first, it is not "completely" accurate, but if you drive around the block a couple times, it calibrates itself and starts behaving itself.

Overall, I am happy with my purchase as for the first time, there is an iPhone that isn't incredibly buggy out of the box.

Picked mine up at about 7:10am this morning. The phone works good. Its nice and quick. I still dislike the fact that it doesn't take moving pictures well. I would like a highspeed shutter. Other than this minor complain its overall a good phone. Now, Can we please make a 'hacking' section for the 3G S? I feel like I have no home now.

Very similar impression as others, I got my 32Gb from best buy, and this truly seems to be the iPhone that should have been the first iPhone. However everything comes good at some time, this iPhone is very polished, the speed is absolutely amazing, and its pretty neat to see maps orient with the phones north. I have absolutely loved it so far!

Well, I would say that the 3GS jailbreak is going to come slowly because, just like the iPod Touch 2g, the 3GS has a different chipset, and finding all new exploits when Apple has surely closed up many of the better ones is difficult.

Personally, I haven't had a jailbroken phone for months. The iphone software is getting to a point where there's very little missing that needs to be made up for with hacked software, and that's pretty awesome after all. Naturally, there will always be a market for the unlock, but I wouldn't be surprised if, at some point in the future, jailbreaking is just for the purpose of unlocking a phone.

While I completely agree that it is "getting" there, we are still a ways away when we can't set custom tones for received SMSes. While theming would be nice, it definitely isn't Apple, so I strongly doubt that we would see an official Winterboard, but I could really get over that if I could get an annoying SMS tone that could wake me up when I'm on call.

Unfortunately, I think that I will either need to swap my SIM card for one week a month which is going to suck.

Yeah, theming is probably one thing we'll probably never see officially. I could see Apple allowing maybe a custom message tone or a springboard background, but even that's pushing it.
