Basically i had a problem with some apps not showing on the iphone even though they were synced properly. So i navigated to:

C:\Users\Ryan\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

and copied the sms backup file named:

"3d0d7e5fb2ce288813306e4d4636395e047a3d28.mdda ta"

so then i restored my iphone to 2.2.1, set up as a new iPhone, then went into the settings and deleted the existing backup (ouch im silly)

I then tried to copy & replace the:

3d0d7e5fb2ce288813306e4d4636395e047a3d28.mddata

file with the new file with the same name that was created when i set up the new iphone.

Then i restored again, this time selecting to setup the phone as a backup of my recent backup (the one where i thought the sms files were)

but when the phone rebooted the SMS were gone!!!!!!!!!!

Is there anything i can do?

You shouldn't have replaced the file in the backup. iTunes doesn't work that way, it hashes all the files in the backup and if a file doesn't match its hash it won't be restored.

If your phone is jailbroken, you can restore your file manually.
Rename 3d0d7e5fb2ce288813306e4d4636395e047a3d28.mddata to sms.db and then use DiskAid, iPhoneBrowser or ssh to put that file into /private/var/mobile/Library/SMS/.

Hey.. i wanted to keep my SMS as well, but wanted everything else gone.

(I had 1TB of rubbish data remaining on my phone after the firmware upgrade and I didn't have any programs installed, music or pics)

anyway.. tried to do the same thing as you, 'cause in the past, you could copy the file "3d0d7e5fb2ce....." to the backup folder and do a restore.

Hoping it was possible, I:
1. copied my latest backup to another location.
2. I did a plain restore on my phone and made a backup afterwards. I made a note of what files where in the current backup folder and copied those files from my original backup and basically replaced it into the current backup folder.
3. Did a restore (with the backup) and I got my SMS back.
4. Obviously some other settings where remembered, such as contacts & Calendar, wi-fi info, but overall better than having a 1GB of wasted space on my phone.

It worked for me, so I'm happy.
