Question How can I completely remove the Tether solution?

Hi,

First of all the problem:
My data connection (3G/EDGE/GPRS) doesn't function anymore.

Analysis:
The SIM functions in other phones. (Not SIM)
I restored the phone to remove the jailbreak but the problem still persisted. (Not Jailbreak)
I BOUGHT a 3GS thinking the problem was in my 3G phone, but the problem still persists. (So software, not Hardware)

So the problem must be in a setting or software that carried over from my 3G to my 3GS. Both iPhones were factory unlocked.

The 3G was jailbroken. The 3GS is not jailbroken yet.

My hypothesis is that the problem was from installing the tether hack. (I have a third iPhone 3G for my wife. I installed there almost everything except this hack). However, I was surprised that this lasted re-boots, restores, and even buying a new iPhone!

I guess whatever changes the tether hack created, they are being passed on every time I restored "from backup".

My question:
How can I completely reverse/erase the changes of the tether hack?

Don't restore from iTunes backup. It is not a tested or supported option from apple where the backup was made from a jailbroken iPhone. The dev team recommend you try setting up a phone as new as one of the basic troubleshooting steps for a jailbroken phone.

Yeah so you lose SMS and other things, the important stuff is synced (contacts, music).

Worked. Thanks. I did lose the SMS which I kinda used to track certain automated banking / billing systems. Oh well, at least everything is working now.

Many thanks again.

If you still have your backup files from earlier, it is possible to manually restore *just* SMS files. However if you did not back them up, iTunes overwrites them when you set up the phone as new.
