Hello! I have an Ipod Touch with OS 3.1.2 installed.
My root password contains 11 characters. (6 letters, 1 dot, and 4 numbers) It's a structure (example): abcdef.1234 When I run login root via terminal and i enter the password correctly it logs me in. However, if i enter the last 3 numbers wrong, or don't enter them it also logs me in. abcdef.1 logs me in, abcdef.1264 logs me in, and so on... abcdef. doesnt log me in tho. The first number must be correct... I restored it completely and the situation is still the same... ![]() How the .... is that possible? Thank you! |

It's an inherited limitation from Unix.
Originally Unix only cared about the first 8 characters in the password. This was solved in a few different ways in later Unix based operating systems. because the OS for the iPhone has to be so slim and there is no real requirement for an average iPhone user to be changing their unix password, you are stuck with the basic 8 character limit for passwords. Any extra characters after the first 8 will be ignored.
