I have an iphone that a friend of mine used to use. It was not jailbroken or unlocked and was updated to 3.1.2. She has changed networks, and I now want to unlock it, from other threads, I understand that it might not be unlockable. It is currrently at the slide for emergency screen. However what I want to know is how to jailbreak it so I can use the other functions of the phone. I tried blackra1n and it worked( It showed geohotz picture) but after restarting it still went back to the slide for emergency screen.

thanks for the link. just to clarify, being on 3.1.2, the only way to jailbreak on a windows machine is by using blackra1n, right?

If you are on a windows machine you can download a custom ipsw created with pwnage tool 3.1.4 on the mac and use that to jailbreak. Not all custom firmwares are created equal, some have extra patches installed you might not want. This is generally not a big problem. To be extra safe you can ask a friend with a mac to let you make the custom firmware yourself.

Blackra1n has significant limitations, it does not hacktivate )so you need to have an official iPhone plan on an official carrier) and it includes a very old version of Icy that will break Cydia if they are installed together. It also does not enable AFC2 service to allow programs like diskaid to copy files to the iPhone via USB. This can be installed via Cydia though.
