hi i have an iphone 3g which i purchaced from ebay but i bought it from an irish seller and i am in the uk and i was not aware at the time that the 2 o2 networks were different

the phone was on 3.0 firmware when i got it so i jailbroke it with redsnow no problems and unlocked it

now i had a lot of problems with the phone this weekend and it stopped working i had to put the phone into dfu mode and restore it through itunes but it automatically upgraded to 3.1 and the redsnow will not work jailbreak the phone

i have tried searching how to jailbreak 3.1 but most things are for the mac and im using vista and the ispw files that i have downloaded for 3.1 are not being recognised by redsnow

i have orders an irish sim card so i can get the phone activated and i can use it as an ipod untill i can figure out how to unlock it

any advice or tips are greatly appreciated

You must restore custom firmware 3.1 which is activated and jailbroken by default

so far this is the only one known way for it to work

Okay, I'm new to all this iPhone stuff. I've got mine 4 days ago. And I've read tons of threads and articles about having a Jailbroken phone... SBSetting, Backgrounding apps etc.
But from here I don't know how to continue. Someone tells me that I have to wait for redsn0w to come with an update.
Someone is telling me to restore a custom firmware, which is working too...
So what is working and how do I proceed?

Please concentrate in this iphone 101 course items:
1- Iphone has 3 versions: 2G, 3G and 3GS. Each one of those phones has different firmware that is downloaded automatically by itunes.
2- All new phones are either locked (Work with only one network) or facturoy unlocked (just insert any SIM and talk)
3- All phones by default are designed to work with Applications downloaded from Apple Store. Those applications are following strictly the rules of apple development. That is why people jailbreak the iphone to make it accept applications not approved by apple. Ex. Apple does not have application to share files and songs over bluetooth. However, on a jailbroken phone you have iBluetooth application that can do this.
4- you jailbreak the iphone using QuickPwn for any FW release before 3.x and you use redsnow for release 3.0 and 3.0.1 and there is not jail break for 3.1 for now (for amateurs - however, there is a solution coming below in iphone 201 course)
5- After JailBreak a new icon called Cydia will be on your screen where you can donwload all the applications that are not approved from apple directly to your phone.
6- If your phone is locked to a certain network as in point #2, you can download from cydia, UltraSn0w which is an application that will help you activate any sim on your phone. so it will behave as factory unlocked phone.
7- The only problem that as soon as you upgrade to a new release, everything happened since the jailbreak time will be deleted and you have to start all over again.

Some points from iphone 201 course:
1- To jailbreak release 3.1 you have to generate a customer IPSW package using pwnage tool. This can be downloaded from everywhere on the net.
This tool will ask you about the IPSW source downloaded from Apple and it will generate from it a custom fw 3.1. you can alse search on the net directly for it.
Then after generating this custom fw 3.1 you open iTunes click shift and restore at the same time and select this customer fw and you phone will be jailbreaked and on 3.1.

2- since your are on release 3.1 already i do not think that you got used to tetherring feature that is already disabled in many carriers and for all factory unlocked phones (this is the current hot issue in release 3.1 on the net).
