I'm using an iPhone 3G. I previously was using jailbroken 3.0.1 FW (I used redsn0w). I've since loaded a custom 3.1 firmware and now it seems like i have A LOT more free memory.

Previously I had approximately 34-38 MB free at any given time with nothing running

With the custom firmware I always have between 58-62 MB free.

are you asking a rhetorical question? If you got the custom firmware because it was supposed to use less...and you can see that it's using less...then it is probably in reality using less memory.

It is not your imagination.

In custom Firmware you set the root partition and in normal restore /update which is predefined.

Either your free memory is read out wrong, you photoshopped the screenshot or Apple heavily improved memory management. Remember your iPhone 3G has only 64MB built in. 3MB of ram for the whole iPhone OS, Winterboard and other mobilesubstrate-plugins you used seems kinda unrealistic to me.

For me SBSettings says that I've got about ~40-50MB free most of the time less, but I don't have any MobileSubstrate Plugins besides SBSettings itself.

Well--it's a real screenshot, no reason to fake it ?? I'm not running winterboard, I changed the background and removed icon labels using BossPaper. It uses less memory than winterboard. I really like it.

The only other thing I have loaded is SBSettings. Sometimes my free memory goes to 62MB.. Like i said, I was amazed too--previous jailbreak with 3.0.1 had between 30-39ish

The iPhone 3GS and 3rd Gen iPod Touch have 256MB of ram. All older models have 128MB. No model was released with 64MB. Might pay to check your facts before accusing someone of photoshopping a screenshot

There is an app out there that create virtual memory (swap file) on the phone. May be that was included in the custom firmware hence giving you the indication of more memory
