I have a serious problem. I downgraded my imported (unlocked) 3G to 2.2.1 after trying 3.0 beta. I am glad I am back to 2.2.1 in terms of stability but with the new baseband my iPhone looses 3G / GPRS network connectivity from time to time until I put it in Airplane mode and back. This really sucks.
Anyone else noticing network loss? I can place calls, I can actually use 3G data until it drops the connection. It won't turn it on by itself after loosing it.

Any workaround? Any help is greatly appreciated.

usually you need to go in and reset your Network settings in the phone. that usually fixes it right up.

also make sure you are NOT restoring from any old backup of your phone. that will do you in also.

The problem is NOT an old backup, but rather a backup from a newer version of iPhoneOS. When returning to 2.2.1, one must ALWAYS RESTORE THE FIRMWARE but NEVER RESTORE A BACKUP.

The reason for that is that configuration and support files may have changed both in existence and format.

EDIT: I definitely agree that configuring the device as a new phone leads to a more stable experience -- however, in this case, it did not permanently fix my problem (though I thought it had at first). After a day or two, I noticed the same thing -- the problem came back. Toggling 3g seems to be the only sure-fire way to fix this at the moment, but it's, of course, temporary...

my policy is to NEVER use an iTunes backup. NEVER.
I may eventually recover a single file manually from the backup, but never do it thru iTunes.

I have however my own backup procedure, SSH based, that selective saves important stuff that a sync will not recover. I also have a SSH based restore. But never use iTunes.

I have the same problem with the new baseband. But there is a non permanent workaround. Just toggle 3G off and on again with any utility you like. This will reload the commcenter which will bring you back your data connection.

Thanks for the advice. However, I did not do a restore from backup, but downgraded it and set it up as a new phone. After having it down to 2.2.1 for a few days, now I noticed that sometimes it looses the data connectivity but regains it after some (presumably longer) time.
So, I guess it's not broken, but it seems to me that the new baseband takes longer to reconnect it properly... Still not very satisfying. I am positive that this won't be a permanent issue, so I will hopefully be back to normal when 3.0 comes out officially.

I won't make a restore from backup after what I read from you. Having it set up as a new phone, I also think it is a lot more stable in the UI after a fresh setup. I was on 2.2 before 3.0beta, now I am on 2.2.1. Maybe this could be an issue, too?

Anyone else having this after a setting it up as a NEW phone?

Well, I had something similar with my 3G phone too. It would lose the data connection and return only after either a long time or a reboot.

That phone was replaced a few days ago after losing the audio from the speakers, and so far the new one has not shown the same problem.

This happened since 2.1., so I think it cannot be related to the FW3.0 baseband.

It has to be a 3.0 baseband problem. My iPhone was replaced just some weeks ago and never showed any problems with 2.2 or 2.2.1 baseband. Maybe it can be both, because data connection wont come back for me even if I wait like a day. Only when I reload the commcenter it will come back.

it is definately a baseband problem that came with 04.20.01.
