Haven't tried myself because there's no 2G restore around, but judging from people who upgraded their 3Gs the phone will work fine but you won't be able to sync with iTunes.

I've tried it, and no. It insists on activation.
I was pwn'd on 2.2.1 with no issue.
Even if you activate with a valid carrier sim then switch back to non-auth sim, it says "New Sim Detected" and forces you down the activation route again.
So far, there seems to no way to use the phone with pre-pwned non-auth carrier sim.

I've just gone DFU and back to 2.2.1 also, and it still wants activation.

1st gen iPhone locked, that was somewhat expected, as they updated their activation scheme and we need to figure it out to workaround it.

But restoring back to 2.2.1 should not be an issue at all, as this is well known at this time.

Was there a baseband update to 1st gen iPhones within Beta 3.0 ?

My mistake. I did a restore with the 3.0 rather than an upgrade.
I'm just doing the pwnage on 2.2.1 again, then I'll update to 3.0
Should be ok then hopefully.

Yehaa! After a careful opt-upgrade click in iTunes, and selecting the 3.0 firmware, I now have an unlocked 3.0 iphone 2G.

Good luck to you all!

I tried going back to 2.2.1 using pwnagetool. No good. Pwnagetool errored out when trying to restore the 2.2.1 firmware. So now my iPhone has effectively become an iPod touch since i do not have any AT&T SIM (i had to borrow a friend's ATT SIM to install 3.0 beta).

How's performance? I wanna run the 3.0 beta on my 1st Gen iPhone but I remember that performance of 2.0 was horrible when it first came out. Is the 3.0 firmware fast enough to be usable on a day to day basis?

That's odd stuu... I have tried the same proceedure twice now, and can't end up with an activated 1st-gen iPhone running 3.0.

Here's what I tried:

1. DFU downgrade to 2.2
2. Quickpwn to activate
3. in iTunes, opt+click upgrade to upgrade to 3.0

My phone remains unlocked but not activated

Are you using a SIM from an approved carrier (like AT&T) and is your iPhone registered as a test device on Apple's iphone developer site?
