Just went thru the upgrade process, I confirm these exact same findings.

Assuming you use a 2G model, just put it in DFU mode and connect to itunes. And restore to 2.2.1

Still getting error 1604 in iTunes here when trying to downgrade. Tried multiple firmwares and multiple pc's. What could be the problem here?

edit: duh... had it in recovery mode instead of DFU.... Had been to long since I did this trick...

But you have to use a different approach.
I do not have a developers account and do not have a official sim.

I discovered that the latest quickpwn version does NOT work.
The way to do it:

Downgrade to 2.0.2 in DFU
Jailbreak with quickpwnRC2 (i did not include cydia as it will be deleted anyway when upgrading to 3.0)
Setup as a new iphone in itunes
Use the UPGRADE feature to upgrade to 3.0
Voila, activation is still there.
Cripes!!! I did exactly what you said to do and everything worked fine until the upgrade to 3.0 was complete. Itunes said I needed to register for the developers group or whatever.

The only difference between mine and yours is I am using AT&T as my carrier.

1 question though... when you said "UPGRADE"... do you mean update? Cause I just shift clicked the update button to update to 3.0. Also are you using Itunes 8.1? I am.

welp, I just restored back to 2.2.1 successfully. Now I am in DFU, restoring back to 2.0.2 and am going to try again, this time using quickpwn RC3. I'll be back for a status update.

why quickpwn Rc3 ?
latest quickpwn 2.2.5-2 should work with all versions of 2.0 to 2.2.1 fw
