Tell me how to do that and i'll oblige. I think the big issue for people are those not using upgrade AND possibly trying to use an non-legit SIM for immediate activation. Once activation is done on first reboot from doing the upgrade process the phone seems to have no issue using other SIMs. If you're having trouble or plan to do this I'd recommend updating from pwned 2.21 using the original SIM or after acquired SIM of the official carrier for your country.

Really seems only people with 3G phones need this due to the modem upgrade on the 3G model, but not original.

It doesn't matter it works anyway, I've updated more than 5 pwned iphones and all of them are working with non authorized sims.. I guess apple don't care anymore..

You just need to be on a developer list in order to sync with itunes, I can help with that just pm me.. cheers!

I do not have a developers account and do not have a official sim.

I discovered that the latest quickpwn version does NOT work.
The way to do it:

Downgrade to 2.0.2 in DFU
Jailbreak with quickpwnRC2 (i did not include cydia as it will be deleted anyway when upgrading to 3.0)
Setup as a new iphone in itunes
Use the UPGRADE feature to upgrade to 3.0
Voila, activation is still there.

I can confirm that DFU to 2.0.2, quickpwn rc3 (on windows) than UPGRADE to 3.0 remains ACTIVATED.

Before that, i tryed going from 2.2.1 and could only use without any sim or with the AT&T sim.

I upgraded mine last night.
2G, non-legit, non-developer, was previously jailbroken and unlocked via PwnageTool+BootNeuter.

Everything works except for YouTube, it didn't deactivate my iPhone, I can properly sync with iTunes (even though after I updated the iPod app didn't see my music for some reason) and aside being a little sluggish (it is beta software after all) it works perfectly (yet again except for YouTube).

I made a typo, i did also use quickpwnRC3 on windows (Windows 7- 64 bit)

This is exactly my experience on two phones. No need to pay people money to be on list for non 3G phones. Also note to those people the checksum for TPB file matches that given here for that from apple. Also I didn't start fresh, ie I simply just took my already pwned 2.21 phones and updated (not restored) to 3.0 with iTunes and viola! Done in just minutes and no need to do a lengthy restore of songs, pics, etc.

Has anyone tried to upgrade their first generation iPhone to 3.0, with a official AT&T, without developer provisions?

Edit: I'm asking for a clarification based on the information in this thread. There is a decent amount of reports difference on how to upgrade the first generation iphone to the beta....

I can now confirmed that ArB's method works!!!! My iPhone remained activated after updating it to 3.0 using iTunes 8.1 on windows xp. Thanks man!
