May be that's my problem. I am installing a "legitimately" acquired iPhone 3.0 beta and installing it on my "not-so-legit" iPhone (with T-Mobile SIM). The "legit" copy of iPhone 3.0 beta is supposed to phone home using iTunes to check if the UDID on my iPhone matches the list of devices allowed by my developer's account. If the UDID matches and the SIM is from a valid carrier, my iPhone is activated. May be the one you got from TPB has already been modified not to "call home".

Be carefull with this upgrade, my 2G does not want to be downgraded from 3.0 to an earlier firmware. Always getting error 1604 in iTunes. Restoring procedure to factory 3.0 beta however does work and can be performed time after time without error. Just when I select an older firmware, I get the error 1604.

What is the MD5 hash on that firmware? That's a quick way to check if we all have the same file.

It is possible to downgrade to 2.2.1. I was able to downgrade to a factory 2.2.1 firmware without much hassle. I was having problem with the pwned 2.2.1 IPSW created using Pwnagetool, getting error 1600 in iTunes. Getting a downgraded (from 3.0 to 2.2.1) phone re-activated was a lot more work for me. For some reason, Quickpwn on my Mac does not recognize my iPhone (probably because of the USB extension Apple introduced in 10.5.6) so i had to use Quickpwn on my windows xp PC to re-activate it.

It is really easy to upgrade a 2G model to 3.0

But you have to use a different approach.
I do not have a developers account and do not have a official sim.

I discovered that the latest quickpwn version does NOT work.
The way to do it:

Downgrade to 2.0.2 in DFU
Jailbreak with quickpwnRC2 (i did not include cydia as it will be deleted anyway when upgrading to 3.0)
Setup as a new iphone in itunes
Use the UPGRADE feature to upgrade to 3.0
Voila, activation is still there.

Same issue with me. I have a USA 1st gen iPhone that I would like to test 3.0 on, but as I am not in the USA anymore, it is being used with an alternative sim. So I would guess it would fail the activation?

Here's what I tried:

1. DFU downgrade to 2.2
2. Quickpwn to activate
3. in iTunes, opt+click upgrade to upgrade to 3.0

My phone remains unlocked but not activated
I did not use QuickPwn - I used a Custom 2.2.1 Firmware built with PWNAGE which was built to unlock too ( Answer no to "Do you have a SIM that is normally activated.."). This may be key to the sequence.

I am using non-auth carrier SIM, so I need the unlock, but activation was not required again after the upgrade.

I cannot discuss the beta performance etc I'm afraid..

3.0 beta upgrade does not work from an 1.x device. One should first update it to 2.x then go to 3.0.

(yeah, I still have an 1.1.4 floating around...)
