I am in the same boat a "Kato" on page 4. I have a unlocked 2G running OS 2.2.1 and want to update to 3.0.. Now my issue is my iphone is unlocked and jail broken and is also legit activated with O2 UK, but now I am living in Canada and was wondering if I did update to 3.0 would the phone still call back to O2 to check if it is activated through Rogers network?. I still have the O2 SIM card in the phone since I haven't been able to get to a Rogers or Fido store to get a SIM from them...

For 3G you will lose your unlock if you UPDATE or RESTORE to 3.0, cause the baseband is also updated.

For 2G you can do whatever you like (UPDATE, RESTORE,DOWNGRADE), that you wont lose your unlock. Cause the baseband stays the same, its not updated.

If you want to have a 2G running 3.0 UNLOCKED (NOT Jailbreaked, you wont be able to run cydia or any app installed using cydia, or cracked .ipa) follow these instructions:

1 - Go to 2.0.2fw.
If you are in a fw below (ie 2.0), just update or restore to 2.0.2. If you are in an updated fw (ie 2.2.1) just put your iPhone in DFU mode and alt + RESTORE (option+RESTORE for mac)in iTunes and choose 2.0.2 fw, that you'll downgrade your phone without any errors.

2 - Activate with QuickPwn RC3 for windows (Some got it working with RC2, i got it with RC3). Also, i dont know if there is a QuickPwn for mac, that can be used in this case.

3 - Open itunes, and select Setup as a new iPhone.(Later if you want you can restore to your backup).

4 - Now UPGRADE to 3.0. Using alt+UPDATE (option+UPDATE in mac).

5 - Done, you have an iPhone 2G unlocked in 3.0. If you want to get your backup, just right+click on the iPhone in iTunes, and select Restore from Backup, and you are good to go.

if i have a factory unlocked iphone 3g and i have my udid in developer program
will 3.0 lock my phone or will i stay unlocked?

furthermore, if i decide to downgrade back to 2.2.1, will 3.0 baseband be compatible with 2.2.1 firmware and i will remain unlocked?

Just gone through the 10 pages of this thread and haven't found a clear answer to this. As far as I can see, most update-while-keeping-activation successes have involved QuickPwn RC3, which I think refers to a pre-release Windows version using an older activation method.

Have any Mac users been able to upgrade an iPhone 2G to 3.0, with activation, using Mac-only tools?


If not, what are the chances a Mac version of QuickPwn from the same era as the RC3 Windows version (that is, QuickPwn 1.0 for Mac or QuickPwn 1.1 for Mac) uses the same activation method that would work?

Have tried this now but I'm still locked out when 3.0 boots up.

A page back there where some talk about not activating 2.0.2 in iTunes when you downgrade, how do I prevent iTunes from activating?

Also just to clear things up, is it necessary with a 2G to submit the UDID in the developer prgram?

will be unlocked. use the sdk to install the latest beta, when done iTunes starts up and unlocks the iPhone - whatever simcard you are using - you got a factory unlocked iPhone

Downgrading is bull, you'll stay with the 3.0 baseband this may cause lots of trouble. If you wanna try 3.0 as a developer use a spare iPhone to do so and stay at 3.0.
