This is my first tutorial here for the ACER AOD 150 ... hope this helps someone
System : ACER AOD150 Netbook System Specs Intel Atom N280 Processor Speed: 1.66 GHz Number Of Processors: 1 Total Number Of Cores: 1 L2 Cache : 256 KB Memory : 2 GB Bus Speed: 667 MHz Boot ROM Version: MP31.006C.B05 What don't work ..
Distro : xXx 10.5.6 Leo Install Disc Step 1 : Prepare Media Find ( in the usual places ) the distro and burn to DVD. Connect an external USB DVD ROM drive with the freshly made OSX DVD on it Step 2 : Partition Your Hard Disk Not going cover how you repartition your hard disks. For me, I have 2 partitions, first partition ( 100 Gb ) for WinXP ( the original OS that is shipped with the unit ) and a second partition of the balance for OSX. Make sure you have created the ACER recovery CD/DVD images in case you need to put it back to factory condition and keep it in a safe place. Step 3 : Reset System BIOS Now reboot and go to the BIOS setup ( press F2 ) and set it to defaults. Still in the BIOS, go to Main and enable F12 boot menu. Save the BIOS settings and reboot and press F12 and choose boot from the external drive ( option 3, USB CDROM ). Step 4 : Booting up Darwin Just beforeDarwin boots, press F8 to get to the Darwin boot options. At the boot : prompt, type in -v ( for verbose mode ). You will see a bunch of text on screen. After a while, the OSX installer will be seen, choose a language of your choice and continue Step 5 : Prepare new partition for OSX Now the fun begins ... In the Welcome screen, Click on Utilities and Disk Utility. Pick the partition you created earlier ( something like disk0s2 ) and click on Erase. In the Volume Format, choose Mac OS Extended ( Journaled ) and give it a name ( e.g. Mac OSX ) and erase and confirm to erase. When done Quit disk utility Step 6 : Choose packages to install Select destination then continue, you will see some summary / agreement page and click on agree/continue. Now click on the Customize button and you will be presented with stuff that you want installed. Leave the pre-chosen one's alone and pick the following. Choose only ONE kernel, chipset and graphic drivers PHP Code:
When done, it'll ask for a reboot .. Reboot and press F8 again and type -v in the boot : prompt. If everything goes well, you will see the OSX welcome stuff and then the setup ... click on continue until you see the Create Your Account Screen .. enter the values and you're almost done. If you get some kernel panic, don't despair, reboot Step 7 : Post installation For post installation, it is recommended that you boot in single user mode to finish it up ( you may still get some kernel panics in normal mode and it's bad when it happens in the middle of some important update ). Download these kexts/pkgs to a thumbdrive cause you'll need it for post-installation. At this point the mouse cursor will be a little sluggish. It will go away once the system is updated
Now hopefully after reboot you will get OSX running stable Optional post-installation

It turned out that on a Toshiba Tecra M7 and on an Asus P5E3 Premium I didn't know to hit the Esc button to change the boot device.
With the Acer Aspire One D150 with the 1.05 (from stock 1.03) BIOS update, retail install with the BOOT 132 method is not possible. The first issue is that neither a Prolific-based CDROM drive adapter nor an Initio-based one will boot the BOOT 132 CDs/DVDs. Consequently I tried the two USB methods. The former involves using Slimbuild (I tried both the GUI version and the v2 version) then restoring the mounted image to a USB drive, then installing Chameleon or PC EFI V9. The Slimbuild route always gave me a boot.com.plist error. Thus I tried the Windows/Syslinux route. Using the generic ISO I was able to have the Install DVD register as drive 82. This worked also with both versions of the DellEFI boot DVD. However, the system always kernel panicked around the time it was doing something with "decryption." The system would reboot almost too fast to read this. Now I am waiting for the XxX DVD to finish torrenting. I'm hoping that will work. Otherwise I may need the older BIOS which is really frustrating. I did upgrade the HD and RAM on this AOD150, but I reset the BIOS as in the instructions, all to no avail. It seems that either the RAM (works fine in XP) or the BIOS is at fault. I have also tried linking via uuid argument at the boot prompt, and also using Voodoo kernel, although I'm not sure I ever successfully loaded the latter. This is frustrating! Will update. I imagine XxX will work. If it does not, I'll install on a Core Duo laptop (no 64 bit, so that won't be an issue) and then transfer the drive back. I wonder if the Atom processor isn't in the proper processor family, and thus the KP. (EDIT: Note that every time I had the "82" option working, I also tried 9F/F9 for the external DVD drive, but it never picked up.) Last edited by NighTalon; 04-21-2009 at 04:45 AM. |

give it a shot ... it installed fine in mine ... just remember to boot with a -v with the installation DVD-ROM .. also just "upgraded" the stock 160 Gb to a Seagate Momentus 250 Gb ( cracked open a Maxtor OneTouch 4 external and did a swap
) and this time tried the iPC distro ... installed just fine too except the GMA950 graphics driver is the wrong one ... after installation, just install the GMA950 drivers provided in the link

So it turns out that XxX does work with the newer BIOS, booting off an Initio chipset.
However, I didn't download the FINAL version of the XxX disk; hope that doesn't matter. I'm downloading that one while this one tries to install. Unfortunately the only media I have left produces regular bad burns, and I think this one was such a bad burn. I'll probably have to do this all over. Annoying. Will update a final time on how installing retail onto another partition goes. It seems RAM, HD, and BIOS are not to blame, at least when booting XxX's default Voodoo kernel. I'd rather go vanilla in the end if I can. (EDIT: Discovered that my faulty media, while it will not burn on a slimline Pioneer or LG drive, nor on Lite-On desktop drives, it will burn well and fast on my new Samsung external USB DVD writer! I think the difference here is that I noticed the box mentioned that the unit has some "disc warp compensation" mechanism. I was using Verbatim media by the way, which I used to think was best along with Ritek. I don't know anymore; it's all rebranded. Maybe my box sat out in the sun too long or something, because I Googled the disc identifier, and it's usually pretty reliable....a bit off topic, but I've been doing OSX86 since 10.3.9, and I've never had trouble like this.) With the Voodoo kernel. Including, but not limited to, when you mount a .dmg. That's infuriating because I want to install a vanilla version from a 10.5.6 DVD image. I tried installing from the DVD directly, but the install hung. I blame my external drive.

I'm embarrassed. I cut a class to get this working. Poor choice.
I've become a master at installing OSx86 on Intel machines, or so I'd thought. I still can't understand why the Asus EeePCs work fine with a default, vanilla kernel, but on the AOD150 (Mine has an N270, not an N280, by the way) we're stuck using Voodoo which kernel panics quite often. I really should wait for someone savvier than I to figure this out. Yeah, right. Two tips: Sometimes you'll just see "E" on the screen when you try to boot. Reset your BIOS, and start tapping F12 later on in the boot cycle. Also, the partitioner on the XxX DVD won't always work. Try switching partition schemes, and then go back. Usually works after a few tries. Last edited by NighTalon; 04-21-2009 at 05:46 PM. |

I had vaguely remembered that with older BIOSes and older versions of MacOS, I had had to turn off the second core on my Toshiba to install. Of course it is not possible to disable hyperthreading in the Acer BIOS.
However, the boot argument "cpus=1" should solve this problem. I should be able to do the native vanilla USB-stick install method from the Dell forums. We'll see how far that gets me. Additonally from those forums: ""platform=x86pc" or (not both) "platform=acpi" are compatibility modes and might help" It worked! "cpus=1" does the trick if you want to boot retail. If you've put your Install DVD on a USB stick, then I think the Dell Mini Type11 method is best. A "vanilla retail guide" is forthcoming. I will also add instructions on how to switch to Voodoo kernel at boot should you want to. I can't believe I wasted 12 hours because I didn't think of "cpus=1", but such is OSx86. I think the BIOS is the key factor here in limiting the use of both "cores". Will investigate further. There are no tools to modify InsydeH2O BIOSes, so we're stuck, if that's the case. Hopefully Acer will see my post! Haha, yeah right. I am installing from USB stick at the moment. First of all, installing from thumb drive is very slow. I didn't know this would be the case. Part of the problem may be the one running "core," but the other seems to be the Atheros WIFI. It keeps trying to load the driver and then giving up.
