Default Can't recognize my processor

When clicking 'about this mac', it says i have "2.5Ghz Unknown." Why can't it recognize the processor?

Sorry if this is a noob question, but I bought my hackintosh off of craigslist. A guy built it for video editing, etc. told me what the processor was but I forget it now

Just trying to figure this thing inside and out right now.

Any help would be appreciated

How to fix unknown processor string in "About this Mac"

go to

Quote:
System/Library/CoreServices/Resorces/English.lproj
You will find a file "AppleSystemInfo.string" open it using TextMate and find "UnknownCPUKind" = "Unknown";
replace unknown with the type of your processor for example, Intel® Core™2 Quad. make sure you change only letters only not the special characters like =, " or ;. Save it, it will ask for your permission, enter your password and you are all set, no need to reboot.

Or you can do it with OSX86 tools

Thanks for your post, i was able to find that .string document you were talking about. But the only problem is, i don't know what my processor is! This is why i would like to be able to see what it is from the about mac section, I don't actually know what's in my machine.

Would OSX86 tools help me solve that? why isn't it recognized?

When you PC boots up you should see what type of CPU it has when it runs the POST message, you may have to reboot a few times as its can be quite quick on some machines. Once you have taken a note of that boot into OSX and google for an application called

OSX86 Tools

This has an option to let you change the info being displayed in About This Mac.

This is probably the most newb friendly way to get it done. As for why mac does not eecognise your processor it could be any number of reason, i guess it may not be a type of a processor used in real macs therfor mac has no idea. My intel atom was picked up as a Core 2 Solo so the detection methyod is quite weak....

Hope this helpes!
