Red face Two things, permissions and updating

Hello, I am quite new to the Mac, and this is my second time trying the operating system. I'd like to learn how to use it and how it works basically.

I've two issues to overcome. I've done a fresh install of Kalyway's distribution 10.5.2.

My first problem is to do with permissions; I am trying to overwrite PowerManagement.bundle, to give me the power management and battery indicator, since I am running on a laptop. Upon entering my password, I am greeted with:

"The operation cannot be completed becuase you do not have sufficient privileges for "PowerManagement.bundle". As this point, I really have no clue where to go from here.

My second problem is updating. As said previously, I am running a not-so-up-to-date distribution of OS X. I have the option of the 10.5.7 combo update. I know that installing it, from the software updater can effectivaly brick the laptop, well half of it, since I'm dual-booting, but how do I go about updating that won't brick it?

Thank you very much, and in advanced
