Default iAtkos v7 and VMWare 6.5

Hi,

I've been struggling with getting iAtkos v7 to work with VMWare workstation 6.5 on a Fujitsu notebook, Intel core 2 duo CPU with virtualization enabled in the BIOS. From research on the forums, it seems that the VM setup is pretty standard:

. Create VM using "FreeBSD 64-bit"
. Disable unused ports in BIOS (serial, parallel, floppy)
. Set GuestOS=darwin-64 in vmx config
. Use bridged networking
. Mount ISO image using a DVD emulation tool rather than directly in VMWare

So I'm able to boot into the installer and can actually get most of the way through the installation process - but it looks like there's an issue on first reboot, at which point the system hangs forever at the gray apple screen (sometimes there's an audio mute icon displayed at mid screen). Also the partially installed system won't boot at all without the ISO still mounted. When I try to hit f8 and boot with -f -v, instead of hanging it kicks me back into the DVD installer as though I'm installing again from scratch.

I think the problem lies in which kexts and modules to enable/disable in the Customize step of OS installation. I've tried different combinations of bootloaders, drivers, extensions, etc but really don't know definitively which ones to use. So, a few questions:

. Since this is a virtual machine, I assume it doesn't matter what physical hardware I'm running on (the VM configuration and the custom modules should be pretty much the same across all machines). Is this correct?

. If so, what relevant hardware is actually emulated by VMWare?

. Is it even possible to get a (mostly) working installation on VMWare?

. If so, can anybody post details on how they got their v7 + VMWare to work? Which options to choose in Customize would really help... I've tried to piece things together from various posts, previous versions, other distros, etc to no avail. Same result every time.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Thanks for the response. Full specs:

Fujitsu Lifebook T4220
Intel Core 2 Duo T8300
4 GB DDR2 RAM
Intel x3100 integrated video
Intel Wifi 4965 AGN
Windows 7 x64 host

However, this is not running as a dual boot - I would like to try to install it as a guest OS in VMWare, so one question is how many of the above specs are relevant?

I did try booting with cpus=1 -v after install, but it still kicks me back into the DVD installer. If I just wait for the boot to proceed automatically with no options, it hangs at the gray apple logo screen.

Any advice?

I did not change any of the customizations (used the default configuration for 10.5.7). I subsequently tried changing various things with the same results. My main question is which customization settings to use given my hardware and VMWare version - I have no idea which ones are necessary.

If I try to remove the ISO and reboot, I get a 'no operating system found' type message. This may indicate that the installation didn't actually succeed.

Not really sure what to try next...

I'm going through this same setup right now, I have:

- Dell XPS M1330
- 8GB RAM
- Vista Ultimate 64bit
- VMWare v6.5 ACE edition (but not setting this up as an ACE vm)

I had to disable the serial and parallel ports in the VM bios, also, use Free-BSD 64-bit in the config, and like yourself am using "darwin-65" in the config file.

Everything installs, but I get an Operating System Not Found error - can't get passed this issue right now - whether I can this to scsi0.present to FALSE or the processors to 1 it still has the same effect.

As for it kicking you back out to the installer, change your bootup parameters in the vm bios or change your CD/DVD drive option to disabled or set it to a physical drive (I'm using the .ISO).

Then see what you get, it will either boot or you'll get the Operating System Not Found error is my guess...

Default so no good for me either

so if I change the config file to reflect freebsd, or freebsd-65 or other 64, I get to the cameleon bootscree, can type -s to try and go into single user mode, etc.. but then just reboots after getting to the apple white screen.

Been having this problem too, but google is our friend
So here's what I found that made this work:

After successfully installing, boot again with the DVD, open terminal and do
Code:
touch "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/System/Library/CoreServices/ServerVersion.plist"
(being Machintosh HD your volume name ofc, to avoid stupid questions...)

Then download http://files.getdropbox.com/u/1115348/darwin.iso and put it in your VM folder. Set your CD image in the VM as this one and boot the VM.
No need to force boot from CDROM, as hard disk will fail ("No operating system") and CDROM will boot.
This image will boot the disk correctly.
HEADS UP: First boot took me like 20 minutes hanging in grey apple screen without spinner but it did finally work, so don''t panic

Good luck and hope this will help many like us that end up in this thread
