Hello all,

New to Hackint0sh, and new to Mac OsX, but definitely not new to computers (many years in Linux, and sorry, yes Windows :-) ).

I have an Asus P5N32-E SLI Motherboard (with an Nvidia 680i chipset), and an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU. I've tried to install the JaS 10.5.4 DVD, but had multiple failures - the failure varied based on whether I used a USB drive or an IDE drive, not surprisingly based on what I've seen. With the IDE drive, I received what appears to be the dreaded "still waiting for root device".

Ok, not to worry I figured - using the JaS was just a trial run. What I'd like to do - and what I --was-- thinking would be possible - would be to use the new boot132 loader and the retail DVD (I want to always use retail DVDs personally). However, based on my testing to this point, I worry that even the new boot132 loader that will load a retail DVD will NOT work with my machine due to the different chipset.

Am I correct, or am I incorrect? I found one post of someone using Kalyway distribution, which I assume has a hacked kernel with the nvidia chipset support, but I really want to use a retail DVD. Am I out of luck?

Sadly I leaped before I looked, and already ordered the DVD from Amazon (yeah, I know, I should wait for snow leopard, but...). However, if this won't work, I'll obviously just cancel the order - semi-fortunate in that it was backordered until next week.

I've seen where some of the "older" approaches just will not work if you have a non-intel chipset, but given the new technique for zero-install modifications, I'm hoping there's a way to do this...

Thanks for your reply. However, either I'm misunderstanding your answer, or you misunderstood my intentions.

I know I can install and utilize OsX on my computer - I've tried it, and it works fine. However, it requires a modified ISO image. What I want to know - which I couldn't find out anywhere - is if the new bootloader process (that apparently allows modifications to be stuck in a separate location) would allow me to use the retail DVD, and perhaps get to the point where I can use Apple updates directly...

Anyone know?
