Question firewire support for MCP61 chipset

Running iDeneb Lite 1.6 (10.5.8) with latest Apple software updates. I'd like to get FireWire devices working, but although it seems to supply power to devices, I can't make a "valid" device connection.

System Profiler -> Hardware -> FireWire just says "Warning: Unable to list FireWire devices."

Messages that appear during boot:
Code:
$ grep -i firewire /private/var/log/system.log
Nov 3 20:45:03 localhost kernel[0]: FireWire runtime power conservation disabled. (2)
Nov 3 20:45:04 localhost kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) TI ID 8024 PCI now active, GUID 00000ae6ff788717; max speed s100.

Installed kexts:
Code:
$ ll /System/Library/Extensions/|grep -i firewire

drwxr-xr-x    3 root  wheel    102 Nov 24  2008 IOFireWireSBP2.kext
drwxr-xr-x    3 root  wheel    102 Nov 24  2008 IOFireWireSerialBusProtocolTransport.kext
Is there a kext or something that may get things working?
