ello, im not sure if this helps anyone out there that may have tried this or is still presently having issues, but i may have found a magic, seemingly regular, way to make an Alfa High Power AWUS036H USB wireless device work on a Dell Dimension 5150 desktop with iDeneb 10.5.6. I may have to start fresh and verify this method, but for now based on memory is fine as i still have the tabs open as well in firefox
My Setup
Software Needed
Steps taken- Install the Alfa client and drivers
- Reboot computer as requested by the installer
- For me this is where i went WTF as the wifi device did not work after reboot
- Install the RALink device drivers
- Reboot computer (possibly not needed)
- And then watch the magic. This could only apply to my specific computer and specific wifi device. Im not sure. You might only need the RALink drivers but i found that Alfa provided the client interface (seeing list of AP's) that seemed to be missing.
Issue I had: My internet is setup kinda janky because im pretty far from the main wireless router. I get on the internet via an AP Repeater that is in between the actual router and myself. This extends the range by repeating the signal. This may have been a complicating factor when it came to actually logging into my wireless network.
Since I knew this device did indeed work on a real Mac and it was able to connect to the same wireless network without issue, i figured the reason i wasnt able to connect was the wireless encryption of the overall setup. Which ended up being the case, so i changed the routers from WPA2-Personal (tkip or aes) to WPA-Personal (aes) and wham, bam, thank god for internet on osx86, ma'am.
Hope this helps, if you have any questions or issues drop a post back here. Im not sure if ill be able to assist you as im not ninja, but surely someone else might be able to.
