if you get stuck at any moment, just force restart the device holding both power and home buttons at the same time
1. get a suitable apple product for this 2. get a (i'd suggest) ubuntu 8.10 cd, or .iso off Download Ubuntu | Ubuntu 3. get a suitable computing machine and load ubuntu on it 4. after getting to the ubuntu desktop, go to the Synaptics Package Manager (find it in the upper menus) and search for and select for install the following: libpthread, libncurses, libusb, libreadline, and, also tick whatever bares a similar name just for the sake of security, and then hit apply and wait for it to install and all of that 5. grab the iphone openiboot needed files off the internet. I'd suggest going to www.iphonefix.de - download section - iphonelinux, download everything there on your desktop and unarchive the tar.gz with the install 6. connect your apple product to your computing machine, put it into recovery mode (not dfu) and launch terminal from the upper menus (of the ubuntu desktop) 7. (you can do this as root or as a bare live session user with ubuntu privileges) in the terminal, go to the directory where you unarchived the files. it's usually cd Desktop and the cd whatever you named it because you're to lazy to write the whole name (kidding) after getting into the needed directory copy paste this into terminal, one by one and hit enter after each (just to be sure and safe): - sudo ./loadibec openiboot-2g.img3 (Or -3g, -ipod, depending on your platform) - sudo ./oibc - nor_read 0x09000000 0x0 1048576 - ~norbackup.dump:1048576 (This will create a file called norbackup.dump in your current directory. GUARD IT WITH YOUR LIFE.) (this is due to musclenerds fear that ppl will erase their NOR, even though they can barely install iphone linux, but anyways, it won't hurt to back up your nor) - install (if it doesn't do anything after 3 minutes, toggle to the openiboot console using your power button, and then hit home to enter the console. that's how it worked for me) 8. hoping that everything went alright, in order to boot linux we start from where we left off after install, now you hopefully have something on your apple device screen welcoming you to openiboot. to boot linux type the following into your ubuntu terminal, one by one, hitting enter after each one: - sudo ./oibc - !zImage - kernel - !rootfs.arm.ext2.gz - ramdisk 3588 - boot "console=tty console=ttyUSB root=/dev/ram0 rw" - sudo ./linux here you are. I hope everything is well, post if you have any problem (maybe I can help) Reps up if this helped! Last edited by seseberg; 03-30-2009 at 08:37 AM. |

once you load ubuntu onto the iphone, can you make calls and stuff or are you just using it to run linux. I am confused on what using linux does for you on the iphone.
Thanks, UT |

right now its just a proof of concept, u not putting ubuntu on the iphone your needing ubuntu on your computer to be able to install openiboot and run the current iphonelinux which is basically just text input that shows up on screen

You are not loading Ubuntu onto the Phone. iPhone Linux is still just the kernel + a few things like a basic screen driver and a text interface. You should not do this unless you are a developer/hacker/modder. You cannot make calls, you cannot play games, you cannot browse the web. You cannot do much of anything, yet. Wait til 1.0 comes out with a GUI, modem, microphone, sound, touchscreen and WiFi drivers. Then you might consider installing it.

I've attempted this on my 1st gen ipod touch and I get nothing.
My ipod sits connected in recovery mode and as root I type: ./loadibec openiboot-ipod.img3 Completes with no info. No errors or anything. The ipod remains in recovery mode. It looks like I have all the required libraries installed. Does the ipod need to be unlocked in any special way before doing this? |
