There's no question about it, the new LED display is pretty slick.* I would buy it in a heartbeat if I had the money, but I figure that I can save about $600 by just buying a no name (read: any non-apple brand) display and sticking an Apple sticker on it.* It really is insane that they think they can get away with charging $900 for a simple 24" display, but I truly lost faith in humanity when I realized that this display is compatible with a total of 3 different computer models.* Macbook, Macbook Pro, Macbook Air; That's it.
But how is this possible, you ask?* Didn't Jobs say that the new Cinema Display uses an industry standard connector?* It does, Mini DisplayPort, newest port to join the ranks of Apple proprietary Apple enforced 'standards'.* How many people remember mini-VGA?* It almost made sense on laptops (despite the fact that there really was enough space for a full VGA port), and they included the adapter so who could complain?* Its use on their larger desktops (iMac, eMac) was even more confusing, but, again, who cares, adapter included.* Then came Mini- and Micro-DVI, also technically industry standard ports.* All of a sudden, no adapters included.* You get a mandatory $30 kick in the balls to use an external monitor on any non-Pro mac.
How many non-Apple computers utilized these 'standard' ports?* Exactly.
How many non-Apple computers are likely to use this new 'standard'?* No comment.
When was the last time a company got away with producing a monitor that only works with its computers?* Probably before I was born.
