Just a quick note to document a change in behavior between OS 2.2.1 and the new 3.0. After updating to 3.0 I immediately noticed a slowdown in the UI: it manifested mainly as slight pauses every second in scrolling between home screens, settings, safari, everything. To top that up, I noticed the device being slightly warmer than usual, and finally realizing today morning that phone was draining the battery in an alarming rate.
I have always been manually changing the APN of my supported provider to an invalid value, since I have no official data plan. In 2.2.1 this allowed me to enable Push for Fetching New Data, thus being able to have immediate mailbox sync as soon as a usable WiFi router was in range. In 3.0 this has changed. I have a suspicion that push mail notification now is somehow linked to the generic push notification system, which I somewhere read is always going through the GSM radio, unless there is no coverage. Thus, the OS was always trying to establish the GPRS connection, draining the battery and slowing down everything. Solution was to set Fetch New Data to Off. Now enjoying 3.0 OS at breakneck speeds :-) Hope it helps someone of the few remaining iPhone 2G users that haven't flocked to 3GS. Cheers, Anestis |

its been 3 days i have 3.0 (GM which became official as well) on my 2G and i ran safari for the first time today and it seemed way too slow. And soon after this I see these changes:
1.) Battery life not as good as earlier 2.) Phone getting hot when charged 3.) Not charging beyond a point... Raj |

This has happened to me also..
what I did was I let the battery drain itself out.. It lasted for about 9 hours. The phone died. I got home and I connected it to an electrical input and let it charge. The phone didn't get heated while charging like it did, its temperature after finishing charging was normal. The battery has barely lost a fraction and it's been 1 Day 3 hours since the last full charge and the phone's temperature is cool. |

I have a new one... when people call me the phone appears off or out of range!!!
I can call, but i can't receive calls!! Same thing with Battery and slow down. I can handle battery and slow down, but not receive calls is a primary function of a cell phone, isn't it? Any ideas? |

Hey everyone!
My first post here. Great forum and great information! I was recently given an iPhone 2G by a friend. It already had 3.0 on it when I got it. I proceeded to jailbreak and unlock the phone for use on T-Mobile. Everything went smoothly, but I'm experiencing the same battery issues that others are having. I can't get through a full day with the phone. I make 3-5 calls per day at most, and they last a few minutes each. I might text 3-4 times as well. Ipod usage is about 30 minutes. I'm just not using the phone a lot, and yet it's still depleting the battery at an absurd rate. I took it off the home charger at 7:30AM. It's now 10:40AM and I'm down to half a charge. I'm thinking this is related to 3.0. Am I stuck like this? Is there a way for me to downgrade to 2.2.1 and see if that helps? Thanks for any help! |

@mranest
I highly discourage downgrading to fw2.2.1 since fw3.0 background changes were highly optimized compared to fw2.2.1. If you're experiencing problems while playing graphics-intensive games, your ram could be full. You could try playing the, in safe mode or at least do a respring before playing it. I hope this helps out. |

After a couple of days of observation, I can safely say that disabling Push Notifications in the Settings menu fixes a lot of issues!! My battery is back to normal now. Haven't charged it in two days!! And I no longer miss any calls. I'd strongly recommend anyone with a 2G on 3.0 firmware to disable Push Notifications. This menu option only shows up if you have an app that supports Push Notifications installed. I installed AIM messenger for it.

I had all those problems, and more!
Couldn't receive calls, or messages. Battery ran dry really quick. iPhone over heating. Edrill is right! all went away as soon as I turned "PUSH" off
