Default Question about updating to 2.2.1

Hello

I currently have a first generation Iphone(2g) running firmware 2.1 and I want to upgrade to 2.2.1. I just have a few questions.

First when I restore update and use quickpwn I believe it will update my baseband. Is this anything to worry about with unlocking and jailbreaking my phone?

Second In a tutorial it said to use Itunes 8.02 for the process and currently when I check for updates in Itunes it wants me to download itunes 8.1.1. Is it ok to use itunes 8.1.1 for going to 2.2.1. from 2.1?

Finally the last questions is I have some game saves that I want keep and I have heard not to restore my phones backup after the process. So is there anyway to keep my game saves?

No baseband upgrade for iphone 2g going from 2.0 all the way up to 2.2.1 therefore the phone remains unlocked.

Itunes 8.1.1 is safe to use.

if you do an upgrade, everything should be intact execpt you will loose cydia and apps from cydia. all you need is to run quickpwn to jailbreak to get cydia back.

if you do a restore or DFU restore, everything will be wiped

so are you saying it would be smarter to just upgrade straight to 2.2.1 using itunes and not restore update?

And also if I am able to get a copy of 8.02 itunes would that be safer to use?

I am not saying it is smarter or not.
I am simply answer your question.
There are few terms being used loosely. They are upgrade, update, restore and etc...

Upgrade from one firmware to higher fw - can be done by:

1. a full restore or DFU restore. This will wipe the phone.

OR

2. it can be done the ticking the check update, this will preserve things that i mentioned above. Let me elaborate on this. You can let itunes download and upgrade (I don't like this) or you can download the correct firmware to your computer first; shift-click "check for update", select the firmware. This will upgrade the fw + preserve.

Itunes 8.1.1 is safe. Dev Team have said so.

ps: I personally wipe the phone clean when i go from one version to another. I don't like to save old stuff on my phone. YMMV with the upgrade/preserve.

Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it. But just from doing some reading around the forums and seen some people talking about taking their sim they want unlocked and putting an ATT sim in while they are restoring. Am I suppose to do that? Never did that when going to 2.1 so I am just wondering.

Also I have seen people talking about emergency call screen problems("different sim detected") and bootneuter problems and I was just wondering what are the chances of that happening? Or possibly what can I do before hand so I can make sure that doesn't happen to me.

Also when I upgraded to 2.1 a few months ago and used quickpwn I got a usb malfunction on my usb hub and the first time i tried to restore I got an error. Just letting you know in case that tells you anything I might encounter this time.

Once again thanks for all the help and sorry for asking so many questions.

- It does not matter what kind of SIM you have in the phone.

- Emergency screen == your phone has not activated yet. You will see this after a restore/DFU restore. This will be gone after you jailbreak/activate the phone with quickpwn or pwnagetool.

- Different SIM detected / Invalid SIM == your phone baseband is not unlocked. This should be gone after unlock via bootneuter.

- USB malfuntion you mentioned is probably due to OSX 10.5.6 update. This has been resolved with the latest OSX 10.5.7.

In your case, your phone will remain unlocked after the restore because baseband has not changed from 2.1 to 2.2.1 fw. You should not see invalid SIM message. YOu don't need to run bootneuter.
All you need is a jailbreak + activation
