I will be working in Bangkok for six months too a year and I want to bring my iPhone (first generation) with me. I see that a new hacked iPhone costs $600 in Bangkok, so forget that. My questions are pretty simple, I hope. Thank you for taking the time to read them.

I don't know anything about hacking my iPhone so please spell it out for me as broadly as you can. Can I hack my iPhone so it works with a SIM card I purchase in Thailand? Will I be able to use the EDGE data by doing this? I do not own a Mac, can I have the hackin done at one of the many cell phone stores in Bangkok? If I hack the phone and then go back to the U.S., can I put it back to normal?

Does anyone have any recommendations for me regarding a good place to hack my iPhone in Bangkok, or if i can hack it using Windows Vista 64bit? Anyone know a good program I can use?

This post will cover a few areas so don't feel bad if you can't answer everything I ask. Any on topic input you can give is appreciated.

Topic A (Using iPhone in Thailand)
1.)I need to use the phone in Bangkok, Thailand. Will the "EDGE" data still work?
2.)If data will work with my Thai SIM, how much does it cost?
3.)Would I be correct in assuming that the easiest way to use my iPhone in Thailand would be purchase a prepaid SIM card and simply add credits or "top-up" the SIM card?

Topic B (QuickPwning iPhone)
1.)I have not "unlocked" my iPhone but I did enable the other three options. I then restored the iPhone using iTunes. Will Apple be able to detect this and void my warranty?
2.)Assuming I have not already voided my iPhone warranty with the above question, if I "unlock" the iPhone with QuickPwn will Apple be able to detect it and void my warranty?

A 2G iPhone would not still be under Apple warranty....

If you have unlocked your phone, all you will need to do is get the Data settings for that network and enter them in the APN settings. Probably reboot you phone and you should be good to go.

2.)If data will work with my Thai SIM, how much does it cost?

Don't know.

That would be easiest, but I do not know how prepaid data usage is billed in other countries.

All you will need to do is restore you phone with unmodifiedoriginal firmware and you your warranty will be fine. I have traded in 3 phones through apples warranty (wifes) no one has ever said anything. Just restore with unmodified original firmware before you go.

The unlock and jailbreak is all software related. It just replaces code with a hacked version to circumvent security and sim chip checks to make the phone "think" it is unlocked. It also does this for the jailbreak to give write access to the iphone's partitions.

All you have to do is restore to unmodified original firmware and everything is fine. Apple may be able to tell but I have never had a problem with any phone I have taken back for warranty coverage. I have been jailbreaking since 1.1.1 firmware.
