I suppose you have original 2.0.1 Firmware on your iPhone?
I had the same problem. By fault I put original firmware instead of custom firmware, cause I didn't wait Winpwn to be released. I think latest original firmware causing problem with entering in DFU mode. You have to be sure that you are in "real DFU mode". You must have black screen, not iPhone and connection logo.

Normal metod for entering in DFU mode don't work with that firmware, or didn't work for me, and I always entered to restore mode and had the same error like you.

Try this, it worked for me:
Press power and home button and wait to phone completely shut down. When you see black screen ("not Apple logo" like you do in normal procedure) then release power button. While you still pressing home button wait before you see iTunes show you restore information.
Then, of course, release home button. All the time iPhone screen have to be black.
Good luck.

Yep, you did it right. Weird, this error is when user is not in DFU mode.
Try something else.

Put this into RUN:
%appdata%\Apple Computer\iTunes
And try to delete everything from "Device Support" folder. Then try with some other firmware version. Try to flash with some custom_restore.ipsw.
I never did it from Winpwn, cause having problems, but custom_restore always worked for me.

I have found that when you are flashing the 3G iphones with Winpwn and with cydia and installer checked, i had to set the partition size to 800Meg.

But for the 2G iphones i set the Partition size to 550Meg

Default Has this phone been Pwned before?

Has this phone been Pwned before? You probably have to put it in DFU mode and pwn it first.
